Update errors

I have the TT XL IQ Routes (Europe) device but each time I try to update the thing it gets to be part where the computer is installing to the TomTom and gets part way through that section then stops and comes up with a load of (to me) gobbledegook as an error message. I have tried several times and it stops installing each time in roughly the same place. Anyone any suggestions short of bouncing the thing off the wall and slinging it out of the window?!!
