I bought a Tom Tom from United Kingdom, I didn't know it was from there. I need to have U.S. maps on there not United Kingdom can someone help me?

You'll need to purchase a US map. Have you loaded TomTom Home on your PC yet? Also, we need to know the first two characters of the device serial number so that we can be 100% sure what model you have, and whether it's got enough memory to hold a full US map.

Hello, Thanks for your quick reply. I have VIAn 4EV42/Z4230. I'm not sure what number your looking for. It was a gift for my wife and I didn't even know it was used. My fault for not reading first. My wife says she connected to her computer but it doesn't except it and she doesn't know what she has to do. She has an older GPS TOM TOM app on her computer but that GPS was stolen out of her car. Anything you can do to help would be much appreciated. Dan. My wife said first two letters are(AS)

The problem is that we've never had the magic decoder ring for TomTom internal model numbers (e.g., 4EV42), so we go by model names to keep it simpler. On the bottom of the unit, there should be a sticker with the serial number. The first two characters of that serial number will identify unequivocally the model you have purchased.

The reason we need to know the model is because there were units sold in the U.K. that I'd call "small memory model" devices that had only enough memory to properly load a U.K. sized map -- very much smaller than a full U.S. map, and I want to be certain what we're dealing with before we start coming up with advice.

OK - if the "AS" is correct (and now that you know to check the sticker, you can verify), then what you have is a TomTom Via 120, sometimes also known as the Via 160, and it will have 4GB of memory. That will indeed have enough memory to hold a U.S. map handily, and in fact, also has a microSD card slot that will allow it to hold as many maps as you could possibly want!

Item 1: The newer models like the Via 120/160 do NOT use the old TomTom Home application. These new models use something called MyTomTom. You can find a copy of that application here: https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/mytomtom/getstarted/ Download and install that application on the PC of your choice.

Item 2: Assuming that your wife had registered her old TomTom with the old TomTom Home program, it is important that you do NOT use the same email address for this new unit that you used for the old one. Maps and subscriptions are keyed to the email address used, and if you use the old address, it's going to confuse the TomTom server unless you call tech support and have them manually move the old email address to the new unit.

Item 3: Once you have installed the new software, connect your Via unit using the supplied USB cable. There will be a new MyTomTom icon in the systray in the lower right corner of your screen. Right click on that and select "MyTomTom", and select the MyTomTom button in the upper right of that web page. From there, you will be offered the option of logging in (can't do that yet) or creating a new account. Try to create a new account for the device. What I'm concerned about here is whether there was a prior owner, and if so, whether the owner has already registered the unit under another email address. I haven't a clue as to how a U.K. unit wound up in the New Haven area, but we must assume that there's a chance that this is a used unit.

Let us know how you make out with the attempt to register the device from the MyTomTom page (and remember, with a different email address than the old TomTom unit). If that goes well, then we can move on to the issue of purchasing of a proper map for your "UK" unit.

I have done what you suggested but it reply that I already have an email account, but everytime i try to put this in it tells me Tom Tom is not connected even though it show it in the tray. Any suggestions?

We need to be clear about how and when it failed.

When you attempted to supply an email address and password using MyTomTom, exactly what did it say? Is that the point where it told you that you already 'had' an email address? If so, it sounds as though this device was already registered by a prior owner.

One way to find out whether this is a 'used' UK unit is to call tech support and advise of your situation. They can tell you for sure if it is already registered. If it is, this gets very complicated. If you cannot supply any information about the previous registration, the assumption will be that it is a stolen unit.

I guess it's time to ask -- where did you buy this unit???
