TomTom Model(s)
Rider 550
My TT Rider 550 turned itself off on a recent trip and could not be turned on.

I ahve checked and yy bike mount is delivering 5.5v and the TT Rider 550 was connected today for a good 4 hours ride.

If I hold the power button down for around 15-20 seconds then the device turns on and displays the "TomTom and Drums" message. I do NOT get the drums audio nor the white progress bar that usually fills bottom left to right. Then after around 20 seconds the unit turns itself off.

What can I do to get this device back and working?

Thanks,
Mark

Since you can at least get the power button to function, it might be worth looking at the 'recovery' process. You'll need to hold it a bit longer (see video).

Canderson. Thank you for the steer.

I watched this video yesterday, which is why I took the bike out today to ensure that the TT was charged for at least 2 hours.

The next step in the video is to turn on the device. I have to hold the button down for 20 seconds to see it come into life (they seem to do it instantaneously). I then release the button and depress again waiting to see the white text. This does not appear. With the button remaining depressed I see the TomTom text, then after 10 seconds or so the black screen, then the TomTom text - it keeps looping like that.

How do I get out of the loop. I have tried three quick button presses whilst the TomTom text is being displayed but nothing.

Ah - you need HOLD the button down after you see it 'come to life' and continue to hold it while you wait to get the black and white text. Don't release the button until you see that. The 'three presses' must occur whilst you're on the black and white screen.

Canderson,

Sorry if I was not completly clear on whatr I had written above, so I have tried again using this exact sequence.

From device OFF.
Hold the power button down through the following:

1) TomTom message appears; after about 10 seconds screen goes black.
2) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.
3) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.
4) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.
5) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.
6) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.
7) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.
8) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.
9) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.
10) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.
11) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; after about a further 10 seconds screen goes black.

12) After a couple of seconds the TomTom message appears; RELEASE the power button and after about a further 46 seconds screen goes black.

My device is not following the documented reset process (unfortunately).

Ah, understand now. You are saying that the looping is occurring WHILE you keep the button continuously pressed. When I read "I then release the button" in your earlier post, I had thought you had meant otherwise.

That's an unusual loop. Just had another incident here where it appeared necessary to force a complete shutdown of the device by allowing the battery to go flat. If you can't get to the diag screen using the instructions, I'd have to recommend the flat battery approach to you, too.

Do I just remove the battery? If that is the case then I have previously done that and the battery was disconnected from a few days.

You'd need to drop a load across the battery while it was disconnected in order to 'drain' it down a bit. A 47 ohm resistor connected across the black/red until the battery reached 3.0V, then promptly removed, would do the trick nicely. Definitely don't want to drop it below 3.0V.

Canderson,

Originally I thought thiswas a battery issue, so I purchased a replacement. I have reinstated the original battery that is showing 3.04v and when I press the power button I now get a "red battery" sysmbol on the screen. So it seems I'm in the ready state...

Can I be clear on the flat battery procedure please; is it as follows?
  1. Open TT MyDrive Connect on my PC.
  2. Connect the Rider 550 to the PC via USB.
  3. Let TT MyDrive Connect do its magic.
... or other?

Thanks,
Mark

You can now try charging the device, hoping that it's sufficiently brain dead to have forgotten whatever bizarre state it was in previously. Give it a couple of hours on a mains charger.

Depending upon what happens when you try to boot it, we can try moving forward from there. If it boots properly, then we need do nothing. If not, we need to try one last time to get it into recovery mode.

Canderson,

I charged on a mains charger for 2 hours and the battery voltage rose to 3.64v.

I pressed and remained held the power button, but this just cycled between the TomTom message and black screen (many times) as before.

I pressed and remained held the power button until the TomTom message appeared and then released the power button. The TomTom message remained for about 40 seconds and then turned off as before.

What's our try one last time to get it into recovery mode (appreciate your persistance; I never thought I would be so anxious to hear the TomTom drum roll).

Thought perhaps we could break the loop by shutting down the CPU with a dead battery, but it doesn't appear that this is going to work.

Canderson,

Is there anything else that we can try to resurrect my Rider 550, or is it now beyond repair and destined for recycling?

Thank you for your assistanve to date.

The 550, being based upon the GO 620 family of devices, may behave a bit differently with regard to recovery mode than what I suggested earlier.

Try this slightly different approach:

Turn the 550 on. The TomTom logo appears. Now release the button, press it again and keep it pressed. The drum sound will be audible and short after, button still pressed, the diagnostics screen will appear.

  1. Turned the 550 on.
  2. The TomTom logo appears.
  3. Released the button, pressed it again and kept it pressed.
NO drum sound audible and just continually loops as described previously until button released (i.e. no diagnostics displayed).

What are ALL the various model reset procedures; I'm happy to try them all?

Certainly would be easier with a reset 'pin hole', but alas not on the Rider 550.

Sadly, you have already tried the two relevant to that generation of device.
