TT 550 in update loop

My friend has reached his limit of frustration and handed me his 550 Rider . The problem is that the device is in a constant loop with 2 updates between 75% and 99%. So the device is now stuck and I can't even get out of this rotatating circle screen. I've tried a soft reset several times without result. The device is connected to the wifi network at home. Any wisdom here ?

One question is your rider also connected by cable to your computer?

No via WiFi.

In order to regain control, get the device away from any valid WiFi connection area and keep it disconnected from the computer. Eventually, and it may take a while, it will give up trying to perform the update.
