Hello. Just found this site and hope you will be able to help.

I just down loaded the latest map (in UK) and during the update this error message appeared in home:

Error reading file: F:\Currentmap.dat. Home refused to instal the new map, and when unpliugged and turned on my ONE said it had no map! I then tried a re-set, plugged it back in to teh computer and used HOME to add the map to my device. UNplugged again, but now I get the orange working screen, but rather than loading up the map as normal get a big red circle in teh bottonm right, with a flashing X in it.

What have I done wrong?

What can I do to fix this?

Any help much appreciated.

Alastair

For starters, your downloaded map should be here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\

and you can install it without using Home. See here:

https://www.tomtomforums.com/genera...nstall-downloaded-map-without-using-home.html

So, I'd suggest this:
1. connect the unit to the computer.
2. Make an Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents, such as they are.
3. After ensuring the downloaded compressed map is where I pointed to, then start Home.
4. You should be offered an application. If so, accept and install.
5. Disconnect the unit properly from Home using the Device Disconnect on the bottom right.
6. Restart the unit. It should boot to the message 'no maps found'.
7. If so, connect to the computer again, do not start Home.
8. Use the information in the link to install the map on the unit.
9. After installation, disconnect the unit from the computer properly using the Hardware Device icon in the notification area on the bottom right of your screen.
10. Reboot the unit. Does it start normally and does it detect the map? If so,
11. Connect to the computer again and make another Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents.
12. Dump the original backup from step 2 above.

I tried your info from 07-19-09, didn't find it this time. I had done a update and pop-up said cant run USA & Canada on this device, which it used to.
found usa_canada_map_cab and activation_map_cab, I unziped to map folder and copied to device empty map folder. I quickly got folder full. the attached shows files, whats not needed? what is trackback

Is your empty folder called **exactly** USA_and_Canada? Is there a file with the extension of .meta.dct in there? (It's hard to tell from your screenshot. Can you change your settings to show extensions for known file types? It's in Control Panel, Folder View Options, Advanced)

When you look at the contents of the USA_and_Canada folder, do you see a file called mapsettings.cfg?

Stiil not working

Thanks for the advice so far. I have followed your instructions to the letter, and unfortunately they havn't worked.
ie: HOME still shows the same error message (Error reading map file.... as in my first post) and the unit itself still refuses to boot up beyond the orange screen with a red X.

Is there anything else I could try, or should I call Tomtom support, wherever they may be.

Thanks in advance.

Its working!

Just thought I would update you wil how it was fixed.

As above, I called UK TOMTOM help, and they suggested that to fix the 'Red X' I should delete the application from both the device and my computer via home. I tried this, but I was still getting the same error message as before and it could not delete a file called ttsystem, because it was corrupt. I therefore deployed the nuclear option!

Basically, I did the following:

1. Moved all the files from the device to a new folder on my dsktop, without using HOME. This left the corrupt files on the device.
2. After completely shutting down HOME (even in the systray), I formatted the device.
3. I moved the files back on to the device.
4. I opened HOME and Updated device. The 1st application installed was in Dutch, but at the 2nd attempt, Eureka, we were back in the mother tongue.
5. Reloaded my new map and Homer J Simpson voice and all is well.

I hope this is of help to somebody.
