Hi all,
My start 50 has begun playing up, after not being used for 18 months, though left connected to keep battery topped up.
The touchscreen has stopped working, and after popping the unit apart to investigate I found the sticky tape on the ribbon lead to the screen has begun to peel off,and when I pressed it between two fingers the screen worked properly.
As a temporary fix I've stuck a small strip of electrical tape on it and it appears to have worked.
What could be the actual issue, as I don't believe a bit of sticky tape would cause the screen to stop working? ( the screen is on, but no touch activation)

If there is a solder joint it could be dry.
Sounds more like he's gotten involved with the actual flex cable connection there. Would have been interesting to have had a photo of the before/after and where he was pressing.

Canderson is correct.
Where the cable exits the base of the screen it has a fold in it to facilitate it connecting to the board. It has quite a lot of components connected to it, and these are covered by a strip of clear green tinted sticky tape that covers both sides of the flat flex. When I pinched the flex between finger and thumb the screen changed to the actual map of the area I'm in and I was able to navigate between settings menu and map, but if I let go of the flex I lost touch mode

PS I'm waiting for a electrical toolkit to arrive before I attempt to open the case again as using a Stanley blade was not ideal.
When it arrives I will upload some pics

In my opinion, it is the contacts of the GPS side plug that have become loose.
If that is the case, you need to unsolder and change this mini plug if you can find one.

As promised here's some pics
