TomTom XXL 540 OS

Thank you!
Linux is not QUITE orgasmic!!
:)

Just wondering - in what way it would have been 'orgasmic' if it was some Windows flavour?

I don't see how it matters.

As far as I can see, all that counts it how easy it is to use the device as such and how easy it is to use it with either a PC or a MAC for managing the device - upgrade the software on the device, copy more applications (or POI files on a Sat Nav) to run on the device etc

1. "Orgasmic" is by way of an "in" joke and refers to a reply by dhn to an earlier post of mine in another thread.

2. It "matters" in the sense that TomTom (and others) discuss active browsing and manipulation of the device folders and files e.g. map overlays and custom screens. Knowing whose backyard I'm in allows me to avoid tripping over any traps for unwary players such as file-naming conventions and possible issues with text files.

Well for file-naming conventions etc, Tom Tom seem to have taken care to make them as transparent to the user as possible. So I still am not able to see this as a problem when the device is running Linux.

I don't think the device runs any Intel x86 based processor so there is no way any Windows application would run without re-compiling and building for the target processor - so I don't see how it matters whether the device runs Linux or Windows - or for all we know some completely proprietary TomTomOS for arguments sake.

Even Windows as such seems to be not too reliant on file name extensions as it used to be in the MS-DOS days - so....?

So long as you stick with Home, that's true. Start fiddling on your own, however, and you quickly realize it's Linux under the hood when things start getting case sensitive.

1. It matters to me - I don't know much about Linux.
2. It does not matter to you, however you seem to know as little about Windows as do I about Linux. Windows is UTTERLY reliant on file extemsions, and they are all recorded in the registry. They determine the default program for a file, the default action if it is double-clicked and what options are offered if it is right-clicked. Windows identifies TomTom .CHK files as 'recovered file fragments' and, from a Windows perspective, I should delete them. Being cautious in the Linux backyard, I leave 'em alone - and my device keeps working.
3. When you operate/manage YOUR device your comfort and confidence are paramount - and I respect that. Perhaps you could accord me the same respect!

Sorry - but I have seen this apparent mutual distrust very often.

In the past I have had to interact with Windows programmers and Linux programmers and this mutual distrust is a major hurdle stopping development of both Windows world and Linux world.

I have also had to bring them together to achieve what is required. The first step is usually for both sides to stop picking negative points in the other's world but treat them as properties and try to work with them.

Making assumptions is bad - "Ass-u-me" makes for two donkeys - pun intended.

I don't know what makes you say 'Perhaps you could accord me the same respect' - and I don't want to assume anything.

"I don't see how it matters."
"I don't think ... so I don't see how it matters "
"I have seen this apparent mutual distrust very often ..."
"I don't know what makes you say ..."

No! I'm afraid you don't see, think or know! How Sad!
However, you are not my responsibility!
I have asked a question and have been simply answered.
I am content ...
As to You? Farewell, and Good Luck!
