TomTom VS Garmin

I drive a delivery truck in Indiana and have been using the TomTom Go 730 for about 7 or 8 months. My company also installed a Garmin unit about 5 months ago. So I have been comparing them for a while now. I have noticed a lot of differences between the GPS's and for the most part I think the TomTom comes out on top.... But the Single most important difference, the map set, TomTom is way behind. Daily, as I drive ito a newer (less than 5 or 6 years old) neighborhood, the Garmin has the streets shown on the map (the addresses may be off by a bit) and my TomTom shows me driving in a field with no streets. Where I live, the neighborhood was developed in 2003 and my TomTom still showes it as a field but the Garmin has all of the streets shown. I have noticed this in every area that I drive. TomTom really needs to do something with thier map set.

If I were buying a GPS today I would have to g with the Garmin. I think TomTom has the edge with Display, Ease of use, Directions and many other areas, BUT.... If it can't find a street, none of the other benefits matter.

you are partly correct ! Some areas have better maping with Garmin and other places have better maping with TomTom. I depends where you will be doing most of you driving to descide on TT or Garmin.

What map version do you have ? (Touch the satellite signal icon then the word 'version').
If you have map 8.30 or later, it should be good ... otherwise I have to agree with you.;)

I have 8.351... And I subscribe to the latest maps update. I have made hundreds of corrections to the map and sent them in each time, but nothing ever changes.

My b.i.l has a Garmin with map CNNT 2010.10 .
Map and POI is very good but when it comes to navigation , it's weird.
He drove from Chambly to Sherbrooke (in Quebec) the GPS insisted on taking the 112 (slow because of small towns) instead of Autoroute 10 . At every interchange the GPS nagged him to exit (in order to get onto the slower 112). I checked the setting : Faster time with option 'Autoroute' ticked. I told him to buy a TomTom.:)

It operates in French.;)
Autoroute 10 is something like Interstate 95, route 112 is like US1. The two are parallel to each other. 'Auroroute' is something like 'Highway' option in English. Sorry I don't have a Garmin to check it out now.

Ah, sounds like it might have been a Magellan instead perhaps. They have a Most and Least Use of Highways option. Garmin's is only Fastest or Shortest.

Oh, an old model from back in the day. There's still quite a few of those in use too. They don't make'em like that today.

I found the problem !
The guy didn't see the small word on top "Contournements" (i.e 'Avoid') - so actually he told the GPS to avoid the "Autoroutes" !
