TomTom updates are a joke

They put in a a 7 mile extension to a 15 year old 8 lane Toll Road near my house I use this toll road extension all the time. It connects two major Interstates in the Dallas Fort Worth area. It was finished well over a year ago.

I wish I could use my TomTom when leaving home and coming back at night, but can not, because it is not there on my TomTom. Why don't I update???

I get emails from TomTom all the time asking me to buy an update for $79 and more for subscriptions. But this 8 lane toll road extension is still not there when I look at the TomTom Route Planner.

I have asked TomTom tech support if a toll road is not on the Route Planner, does that mean it is not on the TomTom map update? and they say yes. I have asked twice.

I will never buy another TomTom product. Over a year, is way too long to make this update. Don't you agree???

TomTom has lots of little idiosyncrasies, bugs and quirks that I can live with, but not this. Not this oversight.

I once tried updating it using Mapshare, but you can not add 8 lane toll roads, right?

thank you for letting me vent. I will advise all who ask me to stay clear of TomTom.

sure thing, take a look at this Google map. the extension to the Toll Road I am talking about is numbered 161 and it is the section between Hwy 183 and Interstate 30 that has still not been added to TomTom after over a year.

ok, thanks for the suggestion. I did it.

It seems strange to me, that mapping services like TomTom and the one you suggested I submit this to, have to depend upon me to tell them about a 1 year old 8 lane toll road extension that is 5 or 7 miles long, located in the 5th largest metropolitan area of the United States. Jeesh! Glad to do my part.

They will provide you a link to the work sheet where they are checking and updating the problem. I don't know how long it takes, but mine (submitted 12-2-10) was checked and the problem found within a week or so. It now stands that they are trying to decide how to address the problem. At least they seem to be doing something.

TomTom owns the mapping company TeleAtlas.

New map data goes from TeleAtlas to TomTom where it is 'massaged' to fit the mapping software TT uses in its updated maps.

I don't know what type of problem you reported, but the fact that they have to decide how to address it worries me. I would think there would be a well established process in place for almost any type of update or map error.

Could be that they have some conflicting data that has to be resolved. These guys get a lot of info directly from municipal and state governments for US mapping. There may be a question of actual geolocation vs. what they were originally supplied. Odd that it's gone this long without being noticed and reported, though.

I thought it was taking a long time, but it may be that they were confirming address numbers, etc. The street I reported missing has been there several years. The street connecting it to the main route was "unnamed" until I named it through the TomTom process, but this one runs across the end of that one in a "T" fashion, ending with a "dead end" at either end. It appears on many other map programs.
