TomTom START - no space

I have just bought a TomTom START with maps for Europe. It comes with a 30 day guarantee for a free download of updated maps.

When I install and start TomTom HOME it tells me an updated map is available - "Western & Central Europe 2GB 1882.9MB" but also says "This item does not fit on your device".

There is no option to download the map so I could remove unwanted voices etc. as I have seen recommended by other people.

I have tried removing stuff from my START using HOME (after backing it up), but even if I remove everything but the map it still says I don't have enough space. If I remove the map HOME then says I have nothing to update!

Is there a fix for this? Something like this should be simple for a novice user or there's something wrong.

Scott.

Hi Scott and welcome to TomTom Forums, Just to confirm that you have a backup made using Windows Explorer? if not please make one before you do anything else.

To clear up some space on the device you can remove the foreign voices but very little else on these units, you could try a manual install of the map which will extract all the files to a folder on the PC prior to copying them to the device which takes up less space than the way Home install as map, for details of this click Here - Mike

Thanks Mike, will do.

My problem is that HOME doesn't seem to let me download the map without installing (or not, as the case may be). The tick box to install it is greyed out because of the space problem. If I click for more info it says "This item needs to be downloaded" but doesn't give me an option to do so.

Home should download the map to your PC before it throws any error about capacity on the device, do you have 2GB spare capacity on the PC as Home should only throw the error at the start of the download if it can't store the map on the PC?

Have a look in the following directory on your computer using Windows Explorer to see if the map is actually on the PC:
MyComputer/ yourname/ Documents/ TomTom/ HOME/ Download/ complete/ map

Is there a .zip and a .cab file in this folder? if so what are they called?

The telephone number for UK support is 0845 161 0009 in case you need to discuss this with TomTom, but lets not give up and resort to the telephone just yet! - Mike

No, it doesn't download it first. Only the ephemeris\QuickGPSfix is in the download directory.

When I go to "Use Latest Map Guarantee" I get "Western & Central Europe 2GB ... This item does not fit on your device" straight away and the check box is greyed out.

If I click "More info..." I get "Western & Central Europe 2GB ... This item does not work on your device. Therefore, it cannot be installed. ... This item needs to be downloaded". But of course no links or buttons to allow me to download it.

I've sent TomTom an email but it seems they're only available business hours Mon-Fri (exactly matching the times when I'm not next to my home PC

Sorry forgot to answer this bit. Yes I have 66GB free on my C: drive.

(I appreciate your help in this).

It seems that Home is offering the wrong version of the Western_Europe_2GB map, one that is not compressed enough for your unit.

I may be wrong on this.........

TomTom support have replied, with a suggestion which didn't work, it was something I had tried already.

I'll continue the dialogue with them then report back here if/when I get a solution.

Ask them why its trying to download the Western_Europe_2GB map which is 1886,5MB in size when it should be using the Western_Europe Map which is 1830,2MB, there is also the Western_Europe map which is below 1GB in size but thats no good as this map doesn't contain the IQ Routes data your device uses - Mike

Following a suggestion elsewhere, I copied all the files from the Start onto a 4GB SD card. Then inserting this in my PC it fooled HOME into thinking I had a 4GB device, and it updated the map.

Then copied the map onto the device and all seems to be working fine.

No useful response from TomTom support yet.

AndyV is well known for decent solutions when working around issues such as this, looks like he got the arrow on target again, glad to hear the issue is resolved but you really shouldn't have to jump through hoops involving SD cards to update a device with no memory card slot - Mike

very dissapointed with TomTom,

I also bought a start with latest map guarantee just to find out that i can not update the map due to space. Unlike navigon, where i can choose which maps to install, here it comes in a whole file.

Still wating for a reply from the support department

Bye Bye Tom tom back to the shop, welcome Navigon.

TT support persisted in telling me to attempt the download again and wouldn't really take my word that I was doing it correctly and it was still failing.

Since I got round the issue myself I eventually just stopped responding to them.

See here for solution if you're interested.

I bought a TomTom Start Europe 42 yesterday. I thought it was aimed at those just venturing into SatNav. If so, the map update facility seriously lets it down.

I experienced the same problem as you guys, TomTom Home wouldn't let me download the update. I was therefore very glad to find this thread. I did the same trick of faking a 4GB TomTom, using a memory stick, and I'm up and running.

The problem appears to be that Home anticipates the downloaded map will consume more memory than it actually does. Home states it requires 1,882.9MB when in fact it takes less than 1,700MB. That seems to be a rather basic flaw.

I received an email from TomTom Customer Care. Their solution is for you to backup all items to the computer, delete everything on the TomTom then format it. Then you download maps and then rebuild the other items, bit by bit, deleting a few things on the way.

First time SatNav? You must be joking!

I forgot to mention. Yesterday I decided I'd download a couple of the free safety camera items, GB and IT. Today I thought it would be useful to add a few more countries. However, I see that these now appear chargeable at ?19.95 per year. I now read that only the first safety camera download is free. Had I known this in advance I would have downloaded the lot yesterday. What a pain.

Yes they told me that too. It doesn't work though. If you delete everything then HOME says you've nothing to update (since you have no maps).

If you only have the map, HOME says you have no space for the update.

This didn't seem to sink in to TT support.
