TomTom ONE XL?

I am new to this forum and want to apologize if this has already been covered. I am looking to purchase the TT One XL as a gift for my father. I've done some research and the budget allows for this model so I figured it would be the best choice. The only things I am still not 100% clear on are the map loading. He will be taking this over seas to europe on occasion (portugal). So loading the european or preferably just portugal maps is a must. so my questions are:

Does this unit allow the maps to be downloaded straight into the internal memory? Or do I have to load them onto an SD card first?

Do I have to purchase the CD's then load them to the SD card?

Lastly, I know roads change from time to time, are updates included in the price when I purchase the maps? Or do I have to pay to download an updated version everytime?

Sorry for all the questions. I want to make sure I get the right model. I could go with the 920 but the $500 price tag is a little steep.

If you purchase the new maps, You will have to either erase your US_Canada map and install the new map there or install the map on a SD card.

Thank you very much for the reply. So I can just download the euro maps to an SD card and use them that way. I wasn't sure I could do that.

Are there any resources for buying maps? I have seen some online for an SD card preloaded with the Euro maps but they are expensive. (130)

The maps on SD cards may work. The problem I see is it won't tell you the map version.

No sure I follow. I assumed that I could load the euro map on the SD card and the head unit would read from the card just as if it was internally stored? Is that not the case?

I am a little worried about the updates as well. I've read that you only get 30 days to update the maps once you purchase. Does the same apply to downloaded maps on an SD card?

Lastly, I missed the Costco deal on the 920 which would have saved me some hassle but now that I am back to looking at the XL One with SD card, how much will the maps end up running? Any ideas as to where to get them? Trying to price out the difference between the 920 preloaded and the ONE with the SD card maps.
