hi guys im after some help please, firstly im a complete computer novice and dont really know proper terms etc, however i plugged in my tomtom one and "home" was installed to my laptop. after setting it up it said my tt wanted updating. it carried out the update and when it was backing up files to the hard drive i had an error said it could create a file on the tts? when i disconnected the tt and tried to turn it on it had the red cross! after many times od turning it on the splash screen comes on then turns off.

i reconnected it and tried to carry out the update fully but it wont do it. i have looked on this forum and checked some things ie chkdsk and right click on tt and it seems to be a tts file which is corrupt.
i have tried to reset my tt and try to update but no joy.

im unsure wot to do next and like i said before complete novice. i dont think its backed up and i dont know wot "loose" files are then to run "clearup" so if some one can explain simply to me i would be most grateful.

many thanks :D

Welcome to TTF.

When you connect the unit to the computer, use Explorer (that is Windows Explorer, not the web browser Internet Explorer) to look at the contents of the unit. Do you see files on the unit not in any folder? Also, do you see a map folder (such as Western_Europe or UK_and_ROI) with files in there?

Backup the contents of the unit using Explorer. See here:
https://www.tomtomforums.com/genera...4-how-backup-contents-your-unit-computer.html

Then delete all the loose files (those NOT in any folder) Do NOT delete any folder or its contents.

Connect to Home. You should be offered a new application. Accept it and dl and install it.

loose files

hi when you mean loose files do you mean everything thats not in a "yellow folder" icon?

hi mate i have done wot you said and tried to update it again and now i have an error saying cannot create d file ttsystem? wot have i done wrong?

If you made the Explorer backup which includes the map folder, then format the unit. Don't use quickformat. Once that is done, try the process again. Also, don't use a wireless connection for the download. Use a directly connected computer.

If that all works and you can get the application to install, you should be able to copy back the map folder from the backup, again using Explorer.

how to format the unit and back up the files to re download to the unit. im sorry for being numb lol

I provided instructions for backing up in the link in my earlier post.

Once it is backed up, go to my Computer (on your desktop). Double click and look under the category,
Devices with Removable Storage'. You'll see a drive letter representing the TomTom, probably E:\ or it may be another letter depending upon the setup on your computer.

Right click and select 'Format'. But don't choose a 'quickformat' option if it is showing.

But before doing the format, make sure you have the map folder backed up.

hi mate i tried wot you said but it wouldnt let me back up the files it kept saying it was unable to. i formatted the tomtom and carried out the updates and everything on the tomtom home but now i have no maps and i dont have any back up . is there anything i can do or am i in the . i do have another tomtom go could i copy the maps off there or something?

No, you can't copy a map from one device to another. A map is locked to the device it was first installed on.

What exactly do you mean by saying it wouldn't let you copy when you used Explorer. And I did say NOT to format until you had made a copy including the map folder.

i know you did but when i tried to copy/ paste to the new folder it kept saying certain files wouldnt and kept saying some where corrupt too.
i have screwd up i know :(

Please keep your language appropriate for a public forum .

You may want to call support, explain what happened and perhaps they'll make a map available for you.

Did you ever use "latest map guarantee" when you first bought the Tomtom? If so, connect the Tomtom to HOME, go to "update my ONE", and it might give you the map. Or try going to "add maps" in HOME.

Otherwise you'll have to call Tomtom support.
