tomtom One update help, please..

I'm trying to update my girlfriend's One. I bought it for her a year ago, so I would guess it's a version 1 (although the box hers came in was green, and the one on the website is orange and the unit looks different).

Anyway..It's never been updated.

It's GPS v1.21 Boot 4.81, US & Canada map, Application 6.501

I downloaded TomTom Home, and finally got the computer to pick it up. Still, when I push "yes" to sync up the unit with the computer, all it does is show the hourglass with the hand on the power cord telling me to wait, then after about 5 seconds the words go away and it's just the graphic of the hand, cord, unit, etc. It stays like that. If I try to update through Home, it acts like I need to sync the unit with the computer, but my repeated attempts to do so aren't working.

So I read on the site a bit more, and it mentions if you have a memory card style TomTom One, you need to update the application on the memory card. Is that what I need to do? Do I need to put the memory card in the computer (I'd try it, but I don't have a card slot on mine) and update to the card using Home?

Or am I totally missing something. I've tried resetting the unit via the reset button, and powered it on and off over and over.

Help!

Thanks

My guess is that you have a TomTom One version 2. What is the first alpha character of the serial number on the bottom of the device? Is it an "E". "Z" or something else?

Are you using the SD card that was included with the TomTom? It is possible that the card is corrupted. Does a backup of the card exist?

For the first reply, the version of Home I have was taken straight off the tomtom website. In my programs folder, it's referred to as Home 2.

I'm not sure what the serial number starts with. I can find out. My gf uses it daily for work, so I'll have her bring it over this evening.

And yes, it's using the original SD. I've never backed it up. I've never updated or done ANYTHING to this tomtom in the year since I bought it for her. We're just noticing lately some things aren't on the map that should be, and figured it's time to do so. I had tried once before about 6 months ago, but the tomtom site is a real pain to navigate.

I should point out that it works fine, otherwise. It only locks up like that when plugged into the computer. Otherwise, it works. I guess you're saying the card might not be able to store anything else, eh?

Before you do anything, make a complete backup of the contents of that card!

The only free update you will get will be the firmware (v7.162). If you want a newer map, then you will have to buy one. All of this is done thru the Home program, so we have to figure out why it isn't connecting.

Here's an idea. After you backup the card for safekeeping to a folder on the hard drive, wipe the card clean. Maybe even reformat it. Then try connecting the unit to the computer.

If it is recognized, then Home will download the latest firmware to the card. For the map, you can just copy the original map folder back to the card, or you can go ahead and purchase & download a new map with the Home program.

OK..thanks! I'm gonna have to get a card reader. Even her laptop doesn't have one..lol I feel like I'm stuck in the dark ages.

The serial number starts with E.

And all I wanted to do was update the US and Canada map. Can I really not get an update with the newly added roads, etc, without buying it?

I'll get a card reader Wednesday. I appreciate you guys (and maybe gals?) sticking around and helping me out. I love forums..lol

Reading your first post you may have connected the unit to your computer. That white and orange image is normal. When you get to this screen can you go to windows explorer and locate the ONE?

If so then it is connected to the computer. Im not sure if your gf has ever created an account with TomTom HOME. that is best to do when installing updates.

I agree with the rest. Make a backup. The easiest way to do this is copy all the tomtom's contents using windows explorer and paste them in a new folder in your computer's hard drive.
