I have a TomTom One New Edition that stopped working after I backed it up using the new Home appl. When I look at the contents of the device it doesn't show the application being installed, although the voices and etc are there. I cannot find the software for the New Edition version on the TomTom support site.

When I turn on the device, it plays the tomtom sound and shows the start up screen but then shuts down after a few seconds.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks in advance.

If you hear the drum sound, you do have the application installed. If you look at the contents of the unit using Explorer, the application is really a bunch of loose files not in any folder in the root of the unit.

Try resetting your unit and see if that helps.

Still not working

Thank you for your response.

I tried pressing the reset just after turning on the device. It stops loading and seems to turn off.

When I turn it on again, it does the same thing: I get the screen with the hand that says "Find your way the easy way". After a few seconds the screen becomes a little brighter and then shuts down.

When I connect the device to the pc and run the Home application, it says there are no updates for my device.

Make an Explorer backup, not Home. Ensure hidden files/folders are showing.

Then, format the unit. don't use quickformat.

And then restore your Explorer backup.

I would try deleting the MapSettings.cfg file from the current map folder as an application update probably can't read the old file and is causing the device to constantly re-boot, the device will create a new (empty) MapSettings.cfg file when it boots and you will have to enter certain information like Home address and re-configure any POI warnings you had set up - Mike

Well, I think I have really gotten myself in a bind. When I looked at the folders on the device, the following were empty:

home images
sounds
USA and Canada
Programs
itn
Licenses
Raster
Guam
Logging
Script
TomTom-cfg

Am I totally screwed? ;)

Some of what you listed are files not folders. That said, if the map folder is empty, then there is a problem.

Did you make a backup PRIOR to trying this update? If so, you can always get the other stuff for free. If you do not have the USA_Canada map anywhere on your computer, you may have to pay for it again.

Were you updating the map when this all happened?

Look here:

C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\

Do you see anything there (a compressed .cab file?) If so, you should be ok. If not, and you do NOT have the existing map backed up on the computer, you will need to call support at 866-486-6866 and ask that they put the existing map back into your account for downloading.

The file is not there. I had backed up the device at one time, but installed the new version of Home on a different computer and ran the restore without having backed up first. I previously removed all the TomTom files from the original pc not thinking about the backup file.

I am, as the expression goes, hoisted on my own petard.

I'll call support when I get home from work on Monday and see if they will take pity on me and give me the files I need. If not, I'll just have to buy the new maps.

Thank you very much for your help. I appreciate your time.

They may, just may, add the map to your account. That is the issue......all the other stuff is free and can be downloaded anyway.

Give them a call, grovel a bit, and report back.
