How is one supposed to download the updated map from TomTom One Home
when the map is 878 MB large?

I have dial up on a country line and that file is LARGER THAN A CD can hold...

Even if I had DSL, 878 MB would probably take forever!

So, I wanted to ask if anyone has somehow gotten an "update" from TomTom Inc.
w/o downloading via dial up?

I am currently dealing with Customer Service - I will update this thread if and
when something is worked out.

Why cannot they make TomTom Home work with an encrypted DVD such that
the DVD is useless to anyone except the person with the correct "Code" for
his/her own TomTom ?

That would NOT be difficult to design!

That way, you order (pay shipping & Handling) a map update within the 12
month limit, put it in your DVD Rom and TomTom Home interacts with the DVD and
replaces your outdated map in your TomTom One 3rd Ed.

It could be done easily! This method would bypass all the password and Code
business that TomTom has to use now to protect the Map Copyright.

DoctorBill - a TomTom One "newbie" - never had a GPS Nav before 4/7/08...

PS - how do you stop this Forum from forming underlined links that I don't want here!?

Dr. Bill-

Your situation is unfortunate for sure. Your best bet may be to ask someone who has a faster connection if you might be able to come over and borrow their computer to install TomTom Home on so that you can do the update.

Your other option, albeit not entirely/technically "legal" is to get the map from someone else (like myself) who knows about modifying the maps in order to make them work with your specific GPS. In your case I'd say it's more legal than not because of your dial up situation, IF you have paid for the update, or are eligible for a free one under the latest map guarantee, I would not be adverse to helping you out (I probably wouldn't be adverse any ways :) )

Shoot me an email at xaqofalltrades AT gmail DOT com or reply here and we'll see what we can do for you!

Thank you so much for your very kind offer !

I may have found an alternative route, however!

I bitched to the Support folks at TomTom Inc sufficiently that they asked me to
FAX my receipt and S/N etc to them which I did.....

I called a week later and got the continuously appologetic (ad nausium) support girl
who told me there was no other way....

I demanded to speak with a supervisor and then got somewhere!

Unbeknownst to most purchasers w/o high speed ISP's, you can ask for and
get a DVD of the map burned (within 30 days of purchase) and they will send
it to you via US Mail.

I was told that few folk like to do it this way (the American Consumer is so
vastly dumb - my personal comment) so they went to downloading.....

So in a month or so (takes time I'm told) I will get a DVD shipped to me with
some code interaction with TomTom "Home" such that the DVD is useful only
to me personally.

Fine with me!

So - this is FYI for 'ya all' to ask for if you wish.

I hope TomTom Inc doesn't get pissed at me for releasing this information!

Aren't all of you tired of hearing "I appologise for the inconvenience....",
when everyone knows that it means absolutely nothing at all....?
