TomTom is unveiling a map updating service that allows customers access to one year of quarterly map updates.

The update service is available for a one-time fee as low as $39.80, or $9.95 per map release, TomTom said.

I thought this was old news but, TomTom president Jocelyn Vigreux said in a statement, "The road network changes up to 15 percent each year, but with our 30 Day Latest Map Guarantee, TomTom Map ShareTM and now, TomTom's Map Update Service, users can rest assured knowing that with TomTom, their maps are always accurate and up-to-date."

and here is the press release: click here

I'm still a believer that this service should be free but I guess when your trying to pay off Microsoft you have to forget about us, your loyal customers!

Is it worth it though? Does it give you the full map?

Mine is telling me it's $11.95 a quarter, I guess because I have all of North America?

Sure it's a full map of North America........just it costs less now that it did just a month or so ago when ONE map update went for about $100 US. Now, you can upgrade to the current 8.25 (which you MUST do to partake of the subscription series....) AND 4 more maps over the course of a year for perhaps less than $70 US.

In the 'old days' (prior to subscription), nobody would pay about $100 PER MAP just to have the latest and greatest. It would be about $400 a year and, when all is said and done, the changes after a year may not be that great over a year old map.

Now, for about $50, a user can keep current on every map over a year ..... quite a savings, eh?

This IS old news, Peter. Announced for North America last week.

Hay, sorry about that! The press release came out today though and that is why I put it up. I think $40 is fair I guess but I think I will probably just update mine for $10 every couple of years. I'm sure this will come down to! But as these things come down I'm also sure there will be something even better and cooler that they will start charging for.

Anyway, sorry if you all already know about this but I saw the press release today and thought I'd share. I hope it helps some people out there!

A SINGLE North America map will cost you anywhere from $60 to $90. You can't just buy the map alone for around $12. You can only get the super discounted map if you buy a full year subscription. You also can't buy just the subscription, you have to also buy the latest map (discounted) + the subscription together, always, to have any savings.

Correct. There is no reason for anyone to ever opt for the single map that I can see unless your existing map is two years old. I think that might result in a very small savings over the subscription, but not sure.
