Hello everyone. I'm in a bit of a situation here. I live and work in the United States and use my TomTom XXL 540S World Edition pretty much everyday. On my trip this past week to Europe I thought I'd bring my TomTom along. I landed in France and the TomTom worked right away with the French area. I also used it while in the UK. (just for walking around). Now I am back in the United States and the TomTom still thinks I am in Europe? And my US maps are no longer on the device? I have no idea how Europe loaded automatically and the US maps are gone? I am really trying to fix this thing and it has been a nightmare. TomTome HOME says I need to buy the North American maps again? ($60?). Being this is the World Edition that should come with North America and Europe maps, how can I get the North American maps back on here?

I tried resting the device to factory settings, and also checking my back up (new computer nothing is there)

Help!

Thank you,
Travis

When you look at the contents using Explorer, do you see map folders for both Europe and North America? When you DID switch from NA to the Europe map, how did you do so? By going to Manage Maps-->Switch map--> selecting Europe?

Hi there. First time user here. I just bought an XXL 540S as, while I live in the USA, I travel to Europe fairly regularly. My question is, how do I switch between US maps and European maps without having to use a computer?

If yours is NOT a World Traveller Edition, then you do NOT have enough space in the 2 gb storage for both maps to be handled.

You will need to copy the US map to the computer before leaving for Europe and copy the Europe map to the unit. But you will not be able to get all of Europe into 2 gb but you'll need to install a zoned map for the area of Europe you'd require.

I'm also assuming you do NOT have a Europe map currently installed. (Manage maps->switch map) Is there more than one listed??

I do know for sure that mine is WORLD TRAVELER EDITION so I would imagine it comes with both US and Europe maps.

How do I get to "Manage Maps" so I can switch between US and Europe? Is it on the TomTom or do I access it through my computer?

Thanks for you help.

Steve

Can do it on the unit itself. If not 'manage maps', there may just be an icon to 'switch maps'. It's somewhere ..........

I wonder if there's a chance the thing is set to minimal menu mode? Even still, you'd think that "Switch map" would show up under "Change preferences" after a couple of right arrows.

Change Preferences-->arrow right to page 3. Bottom left is the Switch map icon.

(this is with app version 9.430 installed)

[Dumbo me has that model and finally turned it on to get the steps needed ...:) ]

Switch maps did the trick. Whew! I was blind to it. There are so many options I just kept going past it. Thanks for pointing it out to me. Now we can go to England and find our way around.

Just be careful about the speed limits over there. They are absolute fanatics about nailing motorists.

If it were me, I'd subscribe (about $30 US) to a 3rd party subscription of accurate and up to date speed cameras (NOT from TomTom) from pocketgpsworld.com. See here:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/subscription.php

And, one of our mods, Andy_P is also a mod there as well. So he could provide assistance with the installation.

Just a thought..........

Thank you for the heads up. We where there two weeks ago using an old GPS or Sat Nav as they call them ever there which did not have a speed camera feature. We were staying in Thames Ditton near Kingston-Upon-Thames and it was so congested we seldom got in third gear. In September we are heading to the Forest of Dean so I will take your advise and get that speed camera subscription. The people we rented the car form warned us about speeding too. What with $8.00 gas and Pay and Display parking at up to 2.50 Pounds per hour (Greenwich) it was a very expensive trip but great fun.
