TomTom discontinued selling their standalone Sat Nav units in the US in 2023. Just noticed that there is now a TomTom GO 5 Classic on sale at Amazon for $105. It's an older model, only comes with European maps, and appears to be in German. Can it be made to be used in the US?

Would it be possible to set the language to English?

Would it be possible to purchase and install North America maps (eg from here)?

Has anyone actually done this?

Yes, the Tomtom will work in the United States
Yes, you can change the language for your country
You can update the Europe map for free
However, for the United States map, you have to buy it on the site to renew every year.

That is a truly weird gray market situation. That's coming out of UK stock and being trans-shipped to the U.S. I've not seen that done explicitly before. I never know what Classic TomTom is talking about these days. They've re-used the Classic name too many times.

There was a somewhat recent version called the Classic that came in a 5" and carried a serial number starting with A1. If that's what you get, I'd be surprised if you couldn't swap all maps in and out as needed without extra cost, but I guess we'll find out when you receive it.

Thanks for the feedback. I just bought it - I will report back in a few weeks as to whether I can get it working properly.
