Start 50M
Hi, I am new to the forums and a new TomTom Start 50m owner.1st gps I have ever had. I did all the updates and back-ups.Well lo and behold I had a HDD problem with my computer and lost the original back-up. I have since did another and now I keep a copy on a thumb drive for safe keeping. My 50m is working great Just thought I'd share the idea about backing up your back-up.

Unfortunately I didn't know that to start with, but the backup I have now on the thumb drive is what is on the unit now and it is working just fine with no problems that I know of.

Since any personalized stuff will likely be on your computer's HD anyway, all you REALLY REALLY need to back up is your map folder (North_America, USA/Can/Mex... whichever). The rest can always be recovered from TomTom's server, so that map folder is the key to rebuilding a unit when necessary. You can't just re-download a map using Home with a Nav2 based unit like the 50, though begging and pleading with TT has occasionally worked.

Technically true... but it's a HELL of a lot easier to just have a complete one-to-one copy of the entire thing, so it's a one-step process to put everything back again exactly as it was.

Just reiterating the warning that if a person is going to make a second backup, just in case in case in case, it's the big map folder that had better be intact somewhere!
