It happened to me once with a TomTom 910... soft reset didn't work and it turned out the unit was defective. I returned it for a new one. I was told it's more common than I think...
It has happened to me when disconnecting from the computer. But if you disconnect using the disconnect icon in tomtom Home, bottom left corner and wait till the screen changes on the tomtom, it takes a few minutes it seems to fix the white screen and the need to reset.
