TomTom 1405 continues to flip uside down

I used my 1405 TomTom for the first time. It was NOT mounted on anything (lay next to me in the car). Every so often the display would flip upside down. If I picked it up it returned to its normal display.

I had a rental car so I did not attach it to the windshield or the dashboard. Do I need to keep the device mounted in order to prevent the flip of the display?

Well, not necessarily in the mount, but certainly kept upright....

The device has a sensor to tell it which way up it is (i.e. top edge or bottom edge of screen towards the sky.
If you just lie it on it's back, it won't be able to decide and will keep flipping.
