Hello,

I recently bought a tomtom one 3rd edition with western Europe maps preinstalled (i know its TomTom USA but whatever).
Because i need to make allot of trips to eastern European countries i also bought those maps.
Now i cant install eastern Europe without deleting the western Europe maps.
I cant because the internal memory of the device is only 1gb and there's no slot for an extra memory card.
Even worse, i cant put western Europe maps back with the tomtom software, it doesn't show up in the purchased maps section. Luckily i made a backup before deleting the original map...
Now, is there a way to shrink a map? By for example removing parts i don't need? My previous gps had a file per country, and i could add/delete countries as i needed.
Also, is it possible to install maps without the annoying tomtom home software? i don't want to restore a backup to get the western Europe map back on it.

Tnx in advance.
Nacon.

Yes. Just use Windows Explorer. The TomTom shows up like a hard drive and you can do what you want with the files. Many of us do our backups manually by just copying the TomTom files to a folder on the hard drive.

The maps are contained in a clearly named folder. So just delete current map folder to make room for the new one. Using Explorer, you can just swap them back and forth from your backup folder.

Use Explorer! Forget Home for this kind of thing.

I did try with explorer and i did find the folder containing the west European map. I installed the eastern European map with Home, and then deleted and copied the original west European map but then it said no maps installed.
Also, maybe i wasn't clear, but i want west and east Europe on it.
I cant now because of lack of storage, so i wonder if its possible to shrink for example the west Europe map, by removing Spain/Portugal/Germany since i wont need em anyway.

So basically when i want to know is:
Do i need to edit some config file after manually uploading a new map to make it work in the TomTom? And can i edit maps to make em smaller?
If it wont work ill try to change it for an XL, and just add an SD card for extra storage...

No, you can't shrink a map. You will have to live with it's fixed size. It's really too bad that you didn't purchase a unit with an SD card slot. This is exactly the kind of situation where it becomes useful!

As there is not enough room to put both maps on at the same time, the only other solution is to buy the maps of a couple of individual European countries where you will be travelling. I think these would all fit. For example, France v6.75 (with Major Roads of Europe) is 367 mb. Your Eastern Europe map is around 110 mb. But this solution is pricey, when you see how much they charge for individual country maps (although they are presently on sale).

I wish i knew in advance that the 2 maps combined wouldnt fit on the internal storage, I chose it cos it is small, the XL has an sd card slot but is allmost twice as big....

I wont buy individual maps, as that would turn out to expensive. I managed to trade it for an XL, havent connected it yet, but i fear i wont be able to install the eastern Europe maps on it with tomtom Home since its linked to my original gps.
Is there a way to install maps with explorer? I tried copying the folder onto the root of the device but it said no maps after booting it...

Tnx for the help btw.

update:

So i traded my TomTom for an XL. Ofc i cant upload the eastern Europe maps that i bought since i already uploaded it to my first TomTom.
Also i cant restore western Europe on my first TomTom cos the home software doesn't allow me to update my account back to my original TomTom. It says i can only change devices once every 6 months....

So I tried to copy the backup i made to my TomTom with explorer but now it says that there are no maps installed.
Now i have a TomTom one with no maps and an XL with just west Europe.
I'm starting to lose my patience here.

Is there some file i need to manually edit on my TomTom for it to enable the map data? I checked and the maps are there.
Maybe i should just try and call someone at their help desk (i hate calling help desks btw :)).
