I was looking at the tom tom services over cell phone networks and noticed that **40 and **50 have no phones that support this feature. Is this something tom tom has done (on purpose or accident?) I noticed **30 have a good number of phones that support it but it ends after that (didn't go any lower then **30.) Anyone have any ideas? I am just curious. I mean I pay for unlimited bandwidth on my cell I would love to use that instead of paying more money for something that I use once and a while. Just wondering

I have often wondered why there is no list of "Supported" mobile phones for my 940 (and so x40 series) - but my mobile phone seems to be able to connect to Tom Tom for Handsfree actions.

But you seem to be wanting to connect the Tom Tom to the internet - as far as I know that is what the LIVE services provide you - so I don't really see how useful it would be to connect the data enabled mobile phones to the Tom Tom and do some 'Googling'. I am unsure whether that would be even possible and I can see much less in terms of usefulness of such a connectivity?

I might be completely wrong but I thought if you connected threw a mobile device you wouldn't have to pay for the cost of the tomtom services. I am still on the 3 month free section of my plan (for the next 27 days) Just something I was wondering about is all.

My hands free and phonebook work find and I use the features on my TT even though my phone isn't listed. So at least that works. But the sms stuff don't work which really isn't a big deal I don't text anyhow.

Tomtom has two different ways of accessing services.

On the x20 and x30 devices (and some earlier ones too), you connect to a bluetooth phone and use the phone's data plan to access Tomtom services. This gives you traffic ($60/year), fuel ($20/year), and weather (free), buddies (free), and quickgpsfix (free) - these are USA prices. The traffic and fuel is purchased a la carte.

On the LIVE devices (x40 and x50), the devices have an internal modem, and no longer use a phone to connect to Tomtom services. You pay for a live bundle ($10/month for data and all the services - Europe prices are different). It is a much simpler purchase process in theory, but at least in the USA there have been an unending array of LIVE activation issues.

Well, I am beginning to believe that even in UK/Europe there are issues with the LIVE services - bearing in mind the latest issue for x40 Go Live devices, new Navcore 9.x for them and Error code 1008 - etc.

My 'free three months trial' for Live would come to an end by the end of Aug 2010 and I am thinking is it worth paying for the Live subscription only to go through the activation issues etc and in the end not really gaining much value for money.

I am not sure on if the cost is worth it. I wish I would have known about the TM models I would have gotten one of those. I can use my phone for google search if I have to.

When It comes to the live services I have havent had to many problems with the live services itself. One time it was saying that I needed to subscribe but then when I called tomtom by the time I got a customer service rep it corrected itself. Other then that its been pretty good just not sure if getting traffic and google search is worth the cost IMHO.

You know how I said that phonebook and my phone was connecting?? Well today it stopped working properly. It would let me know someone was calling but was unable to answer a call or dial out a call. Very annoying.

I think I figured it out I believe it was my cell phone. I turned the phone off and turned it back on then it worked fine. But what starts it is when I try to use the sms feature. It simply just crashes the bluetooth for some reason. Just making a note for anyone else. Thanks for the assist.

Anyone noticed that with the latest application 9.054 with the TT740 Live that messages or locations sent to other buddies do not get received by the intended recipient? I have sent several messages to buddies and they stated that those messages are not coming through. Must be a glitch in the application?

well that feature never worked with my phone anyhow so I really couldnt say either way.

Well, one of the features I have never gotten to use is this 'buddies' feature.

To start with "how to add buddies" itself is a mystery to me - so though I have buddies in real life - I have none on my Tom Tom.

The add feature seems to expect you to know the login names of 'Live' accounts of your real life buddies and then expects you to enter it. Does your buddy gets an email or something and whether s/he needs to acknowledge and allow you to join her/him into your buddy list on TomTom - all of this is a mystery to me.

Then again this is probably useful only if one's real buddies have TomTom Live enabled devices and they are subscribers as well.

I sent a buddy message from my 740 to 930, and 930 back to 740, with no problems.

Are you still having this problem? Perhaps it was a 1-time outage?

error 1008 nightmare!

This probably means that with the 9.054 version of Navcore, they are probably using an entirely new database of subscribers and may be that the customer support guys on the phone lines do not have access (or don't know or don't want to or whatever) to the old database of subscribers. This is just a guess.

Here in US, after connecting my 740TM Live to TTHome via my computer this AM and letting my computer download "upgrades" (traffic, fuel prices, mapshare, etc) instead of trying to sell me "Simpson" voices alert popped up giving me three subscription options for live services: 1yr, 6 mos, 1 mo automatically renewing. My 3mos free trial ends like yours (interestingly) on 8/28.

But I decided to bite a cheap bullet, and picked the 1mo automatically renewing, quit at any time, for $9.95 monthly. As instructed in confirming email, logged onto my TomTom account and once all that worked, went back to live services button and found that my new subscription end date was 10/27 instead of the expected 9/27. But I have two thoughts: (1) Will be interesting when I check my online account tonight to check CC transactions and see if I only paid $9.95 and got 2 mos, and (2) whether I get stuck with a foreign currency transaction fee since the first line says "Payment of your order has been processed by Bibit and will appear on your account as Bibit BV."

Update,:D

Email back from TTCS places blame for any foreign currency transaction charges to bank issuer of CC. They say some do and some don't. Big help:D

Finally waited through my bank's 24-hour server failure to confirm (at least here via US Bank in Nevada) charge stayed at $9.95 for the monthly auto renewal subscription to US version of Live Services as purchase is shown to US source. Gives me (1) little more piece of mind as I can cancel if I decide later and not worry about fighting for refund and (2) paid monthly costs $119.40 instead of $119,95:confused::D

In my experience only Capital One cards didn't charge the foreign transaction fee. Good to know that US Bank doesn't either.

Just beware that auto-renewal isn't working for lots of customers. If, after the month, you have problems with the service, call up customer support to fix your account. They say the 3 / 6 / 12 month non-auto-renewal service is much more reliable.
