Tom Tom Replacement 910 vs. 740

Hello,
We purchased a Tom Tom 910 three years ago with a 4 year extended warranty from Best Buy ($700.00). The unit has been used rarely and would not work at all upon attempting to use it recently. I took it to Best Buy last night upon which they replaced it with a new 740 (they no longer carry the 900 series)?

Anyhow, is the neweer 740 comparable than the older 910 as I have not researched these in a long while? Also, the wrong dock shipped with the new unit and as I read had happened to others upon researching it?

Thanks, Ralph

With the 910 you had the mp3 music player and the ability to use FM Tx (dependent upon which mount you had with the device), the 910 also had a rather large (20GB) hard drive. It was supplied with maps of both North America AND Western Europe.

The 740 has no music player and no FM Tx, it is supplied with only North America OR Western_Europe.

What was wrong with the mount the device was shipped with? - Mike

Did you get a 740 LIVE? If yes than take the unit and run. I have a 740 live and I at one time had a 910. If you use it rarely the MP3 and large drive is a non issue. The 740 LIVE will give you live traffic with no extra antenna or BT hook up to a phone.

Hello and thanks for the replies.

Yes, I got a 740 Live but doubt I will subscribe after the free period ends. The unit seems comparable and I really like the thin profile.

The first replacement unit had the wrong home docking station. It had the small, male usb pin whereas it should have been a narrow/long twenty pin or more. They replaced it with another unit which had the correct docking station.

I read the same thing had occured to others. Of course, I then had to contact customer support to have the second unit associated with my account. Other than the long hold, customer support was very good and resolved quickly.

Take care, Ralph

Ralph, All I can say is try the traffic, I had basically the same thoughts several years ago. Yes the RDS via the antenna was not a whole lot of help on long trips. Like anything you need to interpret the incoming data and determine if you are going to use it. I can not tell you how n=may hours TomTom has saved me ver the years. Like Mickey dais, try it you might like it.
