Tom Tom First generation

Hi have the Tom Tom One and I live in the Detroit metro area and trying to map my Tom Tom to go to Boston, Ma. the GPS directs me to go through Canada and since I do not have a passport trying to find only a USA route and somehow the Tom Tom decides Canada only, have a mess here, how can I direct it otherwise.

Once the route is planned, can you use 'alternate route' and select a road that is in the States? Or perhaps can you select under preferences to 'avoid toll roads' assuming that going via Canada involves paying a toll to cross the bridge to Canada?

If you make drives like this often, you may want to mapshare-erase all the Canadian points of entry that the Tomtom chooses until the Tomtom doesn't take you through Canada. That's a more permanent fix if you don't have a passport.
