Time Out while downloading Map

I have a new XL 335. It came with a code for lifetime maps.

So far, I have been using the pre-installed maps (I've updated the corrections, etc, but not the main map). Tonight, I decided that I had the time to do so. I typed in my activation code and was told that a new map was available (860-something I believe). I have 845-something on the device.

I started to download the new map. About half way through (after 30 minutes ... I have a 6mbps connection), I got an error message about the connection to TomTom timing out.

Before restarting, I got the idea to remove my existing map from the device (it's already copied on my computer). I did that.

Now, when I select "Check for Updates" it says none is available. I'm in the process of putting the maps back on the device (slow going ... it's not a fast device, is it). Seems to only update at about 5 mbps. I'm guessing that removing the map from the device confused it.

Or, is there something else that's gone wrong so that it thinks that there is no new map available?

Also, how common are these time outs with Tom Tom maps?

And, why is there not an option to download the map to my computer without installing it to my device. Would feel nice to be able to download the map and have it there before I move it to my device. I know that's what happens, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do that in two steps.

Your downloaded map should go here:
c:\documents and settings\yourname\my documents\TomTom\Home\Downloads\Complete\Maps\

Rename the folder in red to downloadOLD and that should force a new download.

Once you do get it downloaded from TT's servers, you can click on 'cancel' until such time as you wish to install it.

Then you'd use Home's Add Voices/maps .....

"check for updates" normally resumes the download from where you left off.

The thing that confused HOME is that you removed the map manually. If you restore your old map from backup, then do "check for updates" it will download the proper map.

As suggested, I found that I had to restore my old map to the device in order to re-download the current map. I suspect this is some sort of anti-fraud feature of TomTom. Caused a bit of a delay, but did work in the end.

I had previously deleted the incomplete download, so it restarted from scratch. Sounds like I might have been able to leave it as-is for a quicker retry.
