My download for the 7.10 version of the NA map is about 1.73 Gigs, yet the map itself is only taking up about 1.2 Gigs, and the whole NA_2G folder is only 1.6 Gig. I understand that there are speech files in there that we are not supposed to know about, but shouldn't a zipped 1.7 Gig file end up larger? Am I missing some goodies that I should know about (like the hidden cache of POIs that the 920 has)?

Does everyone here feel that everyone else is getting more than they are? :)

Cheers

I was wondering the same thing. Not that I've been able to download the map successfully, it's been stalling out on me last night and today.

Are you sure the new map is installed on your TT? Here's what happened to me - I download 710 map (after about an hour and a half on high speed!). At the end of the download, it says "installing". After a few days, I found that it was actually only "installing" on my computer. I then had to go to HOME, click add maps to add it....Then I discovered I needed a 2GB SD card, but that's another story!

On your TT device, click on the sat bars...that will tell you the map version your TT is actually using, not what you downloaded.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Very interesting... I'll have to give that a shot. I probably have the same version already on my PC! Can you tell me what build you have on yours? Mine is 7.10, build 1584.

The map comes with a great many associated files, some of which provide pronunciation clues to the "computer" versions of the TT voices for text to speech, and a basic set of POI files. Those are all included in the 1.7G figure.

The map files alone occupy only about 1.225G of the total. However the full file set that is downloaded (after decompression and installation) runs something on the order of 1.7G bytes.

However, a "gigabyte" is really closer to 1,074,000,000 bytes -- not 1,000,000,000. Like kilobyte and megabytes, it's an even power of 2 which happens to be something close to a billion.

My entire NA map folder, with a few extra POI files tossed in, is 1,774,771,386 bytes, which is correctly reported as 1.65GB (gotta divide by 1.074). Most of that came as part of the NA map file set.

You are already up to date with the most recent NA map set.

This file (North_America_2G.pna) in your map folder will contain this information (among other things):

ID=North_America_2GB.pna
710
build=1584

Except when it says 1609 like mine does.:p

Clearly a mistake when they made it available for me to download and obviously meant for the 920, not the 720.

Oops! Was that a slip of the keyboard after a phone call, or did that come across automatically on a Home download???

Let's just say the scenario was something like this:

1. I somehow wound up with the USA & Canada 7.10 as a guaranteed map upgrade for my NA 7.05 map
2. I didn't think too much about it until I realized that one needed the NA 7.10 map for the Speech Recognition to work
3. I called TT Support and they agreed I should have had the NA 7.10, not the USA & Canada 7.10
4. So, I was able to dl the NA 7.10, but it wound up being build 1609 which was really supposed to be for 920 Tomtom's with the larger poi.dat file.

Sweet. It's nice when you can get ahead of the game once in a while! Just how big was the file set once installed??? Must have been a bit tight.

Oh, geez......'tight' is not the word!

First, I kept getting messages that it couldn't download the map cuz I had too much on my unit. After stripping anything and everything, I could think of (voices I wouldn't use, sample graphics, mp3, the HelpMe folder, etc., etc,) it finally did the download....4 1/2 hours!!

And started the install......after about 30 minutes, again, I got a message that more stuff had to be removed from the unit! So, I went to the downloaded NA Map and stripped out the cspeech.dat files for about 30 states and some other stuff from the zip file. Finally, the stripped down version did install and I put back some poi's I downloaded from various sites. (gotta know where the Tim Hortons are [<---Canadian, eh?])

I now have a glorious 40 megs free on the unit :eek:

And a new 4 gig sd card that is going to come into use sometime, soon.

Yeah, you could say things were 'tight'.

All the above took place from about 8 pm one evening to 4:30 am the next morning. Got at least 1 1/2 hrs sleep before I had to get up for work:mad:

But, once the process started, I couldn't let go... I think you know what I mean.

With the 4G card, you'll be able to install the whole NA set again -- I'm confident that the speech files can't be divorced from the map set. I haven't fooled around with this thing enough to which of the other many folders can be safely shuttled off to SD to free up space. I'm OK now with the "regular" map load in internal memory and the Euro maps on the SD, but as I consider adding more 3rd party applications, it will be interesting to see if those can be moved to SD, or whether I need to find other folders in internal memory that can be moved to SD.

With all of the West/Central Euro maps (by themselves) loaded I still have 366MB left on the SD card, so there's plenty of room to move things if it's possible. My internal presently has a full 115MB left, though, since I have all my spare voices (I only use Susan) over on the SD card with the Euro maps, too. So it would take a couple of real killer apps or your "gift" POI list to hurt me at the moment.

Yeah, I know about the "not letting go" bit. I had NO idea just how "open" parts of this architecture would be, so the opportunity for fiddling away half the night wasn't something I'd expected when I bought my 720 -- but have certainly done so, no thanks to tomtom forums!
