SD slot on tomtom one

I just got a tomtom one (4N00.005) I think it's v2 or v4 and it has a SD slot on the bottom.

When I stick in a blank formatted sd card into the slot, I get a picture telling me to take it out.

How do I use the sd slot? I'd like to use it to store additional maps and 3rd party applications.

You need to have the tomtom system files on the sd card for the unit to recognize it. then you can install maps.

make a backup to your computer...using a file manager is faster than using home. then reverse the process to put the files onto the sd card. a card reader is best, but you can do a restore to the card using home.

One thing you need to understand is the tomtom either runs off the internal memory OR the SD card not both. If you have an SD card in it boots from there. That's why you need to have the full install on the card.

That is NOT correct for the 720 (and 920, I guess). Can have o/s in internal memory and map(s) on sd.

Does this mean I could use a 4gb or higher card?

Some other forum members are using 4GB cards in their TT1's but I'm not sure if they are the "standard" ones or if you can use the newer high-speed ones.

Quite honestly, I have a 2GB card in my TT1 LE and I have plenty of empty space even with all the free voices and POI lists I could find loaded up (and the latest maps and updates, naturally).

And I did my copying a little different than was outlined above. I put the new 2GB card in my laptop's card reader, connected the TT1 and opened up both "folders" in My Computer and did a drag-n-drop. Turned the TomTom off, disconnected the cord, inserted the new card and turned it on. No fuss, no muss.

The TT1's have 1GB of built-in memory, so it makes no sense to use a 1GB card. But since the TT1 lacks the ability to show videos or play MP3s, I just can't see using a 4GB card unless you have them lying around. 2GB card = joy.

I would go with a 4gb card. If you ever want to buy tomtom media center you will have room for movies and mp3's
