I am trying to install a Lexar 1G SD in my ONE XL and when I do it shows the card removed with a red X over and over again. I did a reset but its the same.

Did you copy over ALL the files on your TomTom's internal memory? Adding a card on an XL is just like adding a brand-new blank hard drive to a PC...you need both the operating system files and the maps.

And what Smokie was referring to is that when you use an SD card on an XL, the XL ONLY uses the SD memory and ignores the internal 1G memory. Thus, a 1GB SD card isn't gaining you any more than the internal 1G that you already have on the unit.

Exactly Birdman. I like to lead people to conclusions on their own! :D

I respectfully disagree. If you successfully load a 1GB card with a different map, one that you don't frequently use, then it can be helpful to just plug it in when you need. Of course it would be better to have higher density than 1gb, but if that's what you have laying around then I see some advantage.

Just my $.02

But, you do understand that for your model, putting a map on a 1 gig card isn't sufficient; the operating system files must reside in the same location (internal memory or sd card) as does the map.

What? I currently use the U.S. Canada map which is 897MB and with the rest of the overhead I have 32K left. I will soon be traveling in Europe and will buy the Italy and Germany maps which are much smaller. Since I have 3 spare 1GB cards laying around why can't I put those maps on the spares alone with the overhead (operating system, poi, etc)? You do understand, that for my model, it should fit, right?

If I understand correctly, I suppose that should work --- as long as the maps purchased are installed via TTHome on to the sd card. (along with the necessary system files, of course).

In Europe, users used to buy their maps exactly that way .... already on sd cards.

But, before spending any money on maps, confirm your plans with TT Customer Service.

You are totally correct. Using SD cards as holders of separate maps is a good use for them.

As DHN stated, you just need to make sure of the following:
1) The SD cards contain the map files AND the operating system (TomTom Application)
2) The maps are registered to your specific device. Maps are device specific and cannot just simply be ported from one machine to another.
