Hi I own a Tom Tom 1 XL and I have a USA/ CANADA ETC SD Card which I want to give "free" to a friend who also owns the same TomTom model, when he loads the SD Card into his device he receives a "warning" that this ( Card) will not work in his device, is there a solution to this problem ( I would not want to use the card again in my device) rayhondon

You don't say whether it's a factory TomTom map card, or one that was purchased elsewhere and subsequently loaded with a downloaded map.

The former should work in any unit, but a card that is bought and loaded with downloaded maps will not. Maps that are downloaded are keyed to the serial number of the unit for which they are purchased, and cannot be shared between units.

Hi
Thanks for the prompt reply. The "DATA" on the SD Card was an authentic TomTom download via my PC directly into the SD Card with the OneXL Connected.

From memory it was not as straight forward as TomTom had indicated and I experienced a number of problems in downloading which involved numerous calls to TomTom in Holland, eventually it worked.

It's a pity that I cannot simply pass on the SD Card to another "user" when I'm unlikely to use it again.
On one occasion, I loaned him my One XL to take to the US with the US SD Card loaded, but I'm returning to the UK permanently, and he is remaining here in Spain, so we can't simply "swop" units as they appear to be "linked" to your email address as well to accept update downloads !

Swapping the units *is* an option.
It's easy to change your account name for each unit (the email address) on the TomTom Website.

Go to their Homepage, click on the green MyTomTom box in the top right, log in with your existing account and then select "Account details" (again from the green box top right)

You'll then see separate links to change the email and the password for that account.

Obviously you'll need to do it for both accounts, and you may find it easiest to use a fresh email address for them rather than "swapping".
The account name only needs to be in the normal email format of (e-mail address removed), it doesn't actually have to be a REAL email address.

However, if you have any ongoing map subscriptions, there can sometimes be issues after doing the swap. In that case I'd get Customer Services to sort out the change for you.
