I think its absolutely ridiculous in the lack of any documentation on the use of an SD Card.

I can't find any relevant info on the use of an SD Card in my XL either at the tomtom site, my XL manual, or this website.

OK, maybe one thing, that the XL can't use both the internal memory and the SD Card at the same time.

My nagging questions...

1. Is there any valid reason to even get an SD Card?

Questions are never nagging....I agree that documentation is poor....thank goodness for sites like this one!

Only real reason for an SD card is if you overload the memory with too many POIs, 3rd Party applications, or *.mp3/*.avi files (if you load a 3rd party mp3/movie player). Also, if you decide to get another map for your device, that is the real reason for the SD card, but it sounds like TomTom is making it harder to purchase maps for devices.

Most people will be fine with the built-in 1GB.

NOTE: On your XL, if you DO decide to go to an SD card, it cannot be SDHC AND you'll need at least 2GB to be worth anything because the memory is not 'additive'....you either use the internal memory on the XL OR the SD card

You can do what I did...

Buy a 2GB standard-speed SD card for $9.99. Unless you have one of the really fancy TomToms that can save pictures and play music, a 2GB SD card is sufficient.

There are some nice advantages to using an SD card:
  • Add every voice, POI list and Map Color Setting you can find without fear of running out of storage space (the SD card appears as a removable drive under My Computer).
  • Install those voices, POIs and Map Colors without having to fire up your TomTom (I still have to keep the card in the TomTom and connect via USB to use the TomTom Home software) -- installing to the SD card in your computer's card reader is MUCH faster too.
  • By making copies of the data stored on the SD card, you could essentially localize your TomTom's favorites (this would require at least 1 SD card, plus the internal memory -- or 2+ SD cards).

For instance, "Snowbirds" could have two SD cards, one with their Favorites set up for their home in Florida, the other with their Summer home's haunts. This could be useful for people who are bi-coastal, vacation planning without adding to the Favorites in your "local" TomTom SD card, etc.

That would keep you from having to look through long lists of favorites, half of which don't apply to the area you and your TomTom are currently in.

Thanks for the well thought out responses about an sd card.

I did get a 4gb card and lacking any kind of documentation I just copied over everything from my tomtom xl. It did boot to my sd card but when i tried to hook it up to my computer and home it wouldn't. I kept on getting a couple of different screens with xxx's over my sd card. after numerous attempts at rebooting/resets I just gave up. I never did get it to boot again into the sd card.

So what is the proper way to copy files?

If you want more help from tomtom.com do a search on memory cards instead of sd cards.

Does anyone know the internal memory speed on any of the TomTom devices?
Specifically, the TomTom ONE XL.

I'm wondering if a SD card would have faster data speeds.

The proper way to do is is to

-put the card into the unit

-format the removable drive that is the card

-safely disconnect the unit and remove the card, re-connecting the unit

-Drag and drop the maps from your removable drive onto your desktop

- safely remove the unit, put the card in and re-connect the unit

- drag and drop the maps from the desktop back over to the SD card

-open up Home and update the unit, adding everything else you want.

If that card is a HC card it won't work. You have to find a 4gb card that is non-HC

Not sure that I completely follow. Is the TT still working but you are now missing certain maps? You might also repost in the forum that is more dedicated to your type of device.

The SD card cannot be type "SDHC" !!!

It is VERY likely that your SD card is one of the "new standard", HIGH-CAPACITY cards that are identified as "SDHC". As previously mentioned, the firmware in your TomTom does not know how to use that new standard, and it is unlikely that a patch will be provided. Here is a "non-SDHC" 4GB SD card that some people have had some success with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820163159

Then again, I wouldn't waste your time or energy in finding a non-HC 4gb card because you can't use the NA maps on a ONE series unit.

Having an SD card really depends on how much you are going to use the TomTom. If you just need it for North American Maps it's not really important to have the SD Card. if you plan on traveling a lot and don't want to constantly take maps off the tomtom and put new ones on--then you probably want the memory. But I have read that people with the ONE 3rd do just fine without the SD card

Back when you could use the NA maps with a ONE, you did need a 4gb card to use it, because that map is nearly 2GB in size. Since Tom Tom restricted the use of that map to only certain units, excluding the ONE, it's not worth getting a non-HC 4GB card anymore. If you want to use a card for switching maps, like you said, a standard 2GB card will give you plenty of room. That's not an option on a ONE 3rd edition, because it lacks an SD slot.

I think its absolutely ridiculous in the lack of any documentation on the use of an SD Card.

I know what you mean. After much ball ache and two calls to tomtom support I managed to get USA/Canada on to my SD card (I'm in the UK)
The card, like previously mentioned shouldn't be HD.
Formatted to FAT32, be less than X10 write speed and have the correct application on it.

Not quite sure what you are saying here... My TomTom One V2 is happily using the NA map. Are you saying that the problem is that you can't purchase and install the NA map for use on a One?

Map of North America v7.15 --- 1953 MB --- GBP 49.95

I went out to the UK site and was just a click away from completing a purchase. I said that I was purchasing the map for the TT 910, exactly as I had done when I purchased the 675 NA map. I don't know what if any problems there would be further down the install road.

As far as I know, that map will not work on your ONE device. You can continue using the NA map that you have on their now, but if you bought the 715 map, it would not work. Around the beginning of the year, Tom Tom made maps specific to certain devices, and this ended the practice of using the NA map on an SD card in a ONE device.
