SD Card??

Regarding SD card for XL-S, is it possible to use one for itineraries? For example, if I was planning a cross-country trip, could I divide the trip into many short itineraries, save them on SD card and call them up on the TT as needed?

The SD Card was originaly intended for additional maps. Example - You have a US TomTom and you are traveling to Europe. You put the European Map SD card in and boot from the SD card and use the Euro maps. The TomTom boots from internal memory unless an SD card is in the unit. If an SD card is in the unit it tries to boot from that. If the TomTom has an MP3 player and photoshow it uses the SD card for those apps.

If you want to use an SD card in an XL you copy all contents of internal memory to the card and the system boots and runs from the SD card. You could put an sd card larger than 1 gig into the TomTom and you have more room for voices, itineraries and Icons. I have a spare 2gig sd card and have wondered if the unit would still operate as fast off of an sd card as internal memory.

So, John, I would have to have the TT operating system and the map on the SD card for it to function?

Yes, from what I understand you plug your TomTom into the computer and choose to connect to the computer. Put you sd card in a reader and drag the contents of the unit to the sd card. If I try it I'm going to copy the files/folders from the unit to the card so the unit remains as is. You then gain the extra memory for itineraries or what ever you want.

I just started the copy:

Copying 607 items (887 MB)

About 1 Hour and 2 Minutes remaining

I have a Intel quad core system full USB2 capabilities. I cannot remember when it took that long to copy anything. I guess we will see what happens. I'm not going to enjoy pulling that tab off of the SD Card Slot on the XL.

The tomtom itself acts as a very very slow hard drive. takes ages to copy anything from it. when you get the system on the card, you'll never use the internal memory again. Just pop the card out and drop it into a card reader for fast backups etc. works very well.

and don't worry about removing the sd card tab off the unit. it'll boot right up from the card as if it was always there.

I put the card in. All is there and working fine. I expected something like hidden files that would not copy or something nut it's doing fine. All inineraries and vehicles are there. I'm interested in seeing if it keeps up on a trip tomorrow. I hope there is no lag or any adverse problems.

Most of the ONE models have 1GB of internal memory and, with USA and Canada map, is pretty cramped and can't accept much more data in terms of voices or maps.

My niece's husband lives in West Palm Beach, FL and travels extensively. He also has a house in Montreal and an apartment in Zurich, Switzerland where he needs to go about 4 times a year and often spends his vacation in Europe. Although my niece is fluent in French, English and German, for driving directions, she prefers French. Her husband speaks those languages and also Polish but for driving in Switzerland prefers German instructions but English in the USA... His map needs include both North America and WACE.

A good friend is married to a Brazilian woman who prefers her driving instructions in Portuguese even though she is fluent in French in Quebec. They also go about once a year in Brazil.

I could go on with examples of people needing an SD card for additional languages and maps but you get the point of its usefulness.

Holy crap, is anyone else's head spinning? Gilbert, you sound like you're a member of the UN, or something! lol :D

I did not speak of embassy, consulate or international organisations employees...

The world is shrinking! Until the mid 1950s, no one in my family had taken a transcontinental flight. Nowadays some people travel extensively on business. I know a few engineers who are asked to go on assignments all over the world. The friend married to a Brazilian is an engineer working for a flight simulation company who was asked to go on an assignment in Brazil and is how he met his future wife. My niece's husband used to work for a company specialised in pharmaceutical patents and travelled all over the world 3 weeks per month. My wife's grandson's godmother is an engineer who just left for the Dominican Republic for a two year assignment since she is fluent in Spanish and her employer just got a big contract there.

As for TT maps there are still many countries not yet covered as far as I know: all of North Africa (Algeria, Morocco etc) as well as all of South America with the exception of Brazil.
