sorry if this is a repost,,,searched and didnt really get an answer..
anyway i just got a tomtom one and on the packaging it says that its now preloaded with maps on internal memory and no SD card is required
my question is if i wanted to download all the extra POIs and things and put them on a SD card to i have to transfer the maps on the card as well or will they both work together in "perfect harmony"
thanks for the help

Actually, this has been discussed many times.

The internal memory does not work together with the SD card. If you want to use an SD card, you must copy the contents from the internal memory to the SD. At that point you should at least be able to boot. Now you can decide to put a different map or the same map that came with the unit. After installing a map, then you should be able to install extra POI's.

so the 2GB SD card i bought for my 1XL is just about useless????

right now, internal mem has like 30MB free. i dont envision dumping the NA/CAN map and individual POI maps are so smalll that i dont think i'll reach the mem max.

if i do, i think it's time to buy a new unit... lol...

It's definitely useful as the internal memory on the ONE is 1GB only. You can fit the NA maps if you wish on it. That way, you can switch maps between the NA maps (placing the sd card in the slot) or USA/Canada (taking out the sd card and using the internal memory).

so lemme get this straight...

currently my 1XL is using internal mem. that has everything.

i slap in the 2gb card. the 1xl will automatically recognize it and format it?

so i jam the NA maps into it.

btw, what's the diff between the NA and the USA_CAN maps?

still kinda confused...

i can still return the card back to the store if needed...

Sort of. When I stick an empty SD card in my TT1 and turn it on, I get the screen showing to insert an SD card. I launch HOME and connect my TT1 to the computer and it recognizes the ONE connected and automatically downloads the firmware and phone database.

At this point, when connected to HOME you can install the NA maps, or any other maps you have.

There are some detail differences between the maps i.e. the NA maps shows bodies of water, some grasslands etc.

The biggest difference is the POI's. NA has serveral more POI categories than the USA/CAN map.

Could you be a littl emore specific? I am in the same boat: I do not understand why I need to buy another map on a unit I just bought LAST Saturday?

Are you saying that the unit come s with a USA/CANADA that has very few POI's? How much is the NA Map and do I have to put it on a SD card or can I just delete the USA/CAN map and put the TOMTOM?

Thanks.

Joe
