SD Card Problem

So I just bought a TOMTOM One XL today for use in my work vehicle... i've been having some fun customizing it. Im very computer saavy and im having some problems, that i believe others have had but havnt really found info on it.

I have 2 512MB SD Cards. One I use in my Treo 650 and the other from an old digital camera. I figured id use the 512MB SD Card to put some stuff on for the TOMTOM (maybe a media player, etc..)

Well my problem is this.

Whenever I put the card in the TomTom ONE XL screen comes up that i see during computer use and it shows an animation of a SD Card coming out of the TomTom and then a red X shows up on the SD Card...

anybody know how to fix this problem?

Ive tried formatting the SD Card in windows, nothing works though.

I think i figured out my issue...

what I did was I copied my entire TomTom built-in card (minus the maps) to my 512 SD card. I started it up and it started up just fine, BUT without the maps.

So I guess the Tom Tom doesnt exactly work if you just add an ADDITIONAL card for memory. Basically the system will use an add-on SD card as the NEW system SD card.

So what I REALLY need is something maybe 2GB or larger for my TomTom, so I can add additional things to the regular folders... i guess thats my problem ehh... not sure why TomTom designed it like that, guess i'll hafta go buy a 4gb SD card possibly.

You are correct. When you insert and SD card, it replaces the onboard memory. You have to put at least the OS, a map, and a voice on the card for it to work and recognize the card. If you get a 4gb card it MUST be NON-HC.

How do you put the OS, etc. on the card????

just make a backup from the original memory to your hard`drive, insert the card and using a file manager copy the complete backup to the card. If you have a card reader that can be used as well.

You can restore a backup through Home to the card`as well. it's faster with a file manager though.

I have read also that if you have HOME running, connect your unit to the PC, and insert a card, HOME will recognize that it needs the firmware, and transfer it onto the card. You can then load all of the other stuff that you want onto it.
