TomTom one XL, each time I insert a brand new SanDisk 2 GB memory card a graphic appears on the screen indicating that the card is rejected i.e. it shows a graphic of the card being ejected with a red X.

I have formatted the card after the first rejection because I read somewhere that it should be formatted to Fat32?.did that and still rejected WTF!!

Can anyone give me a hand here with some guidance for a Noob.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

This has been discussed many times. You cannot use an SD card on this model as an extension to the internal memory.

The card must contain all the operating files and the map folder - in otherwords, everything that is on the internal memory. The unit will then boot from the card, ignoring the internal memory.

Just use Windows Explorer to copy the files.

For only a 2 gig, on my XL that I just sold, I formatted the 2 gig SD card to just FAT, and then you have to copy the ENTIRE internal memory over to the memory card. Use windows explorer to do this and make sure "show hidden and system files" is shown.

This device is not capable of using both internal memory and external memory at the same time. As soon as you insert the card, it overides/bypasses and takes over the internal memory.

Again, copy everything from the internal memory to the memory card, prefferbly using a card reader.

Thanks to both for your replies, I should have explained in my first post just what/why I'm trying to do this, I'm going to the UK tomorrow and would like to download a map of Western Europe so I can take the One XL with me.

I would like the Western Europe map to be installed on the SD card, I assume this is the way it should be done with extra maps that will be used only occasionally.

I need a bit of guidance with the steps to this process.

When I go to Windows explorer I find the TomTom One XL identified as Drive (M) the SD card & reader is identified as Drive (I).

Do I COPY each and every file (Except the Australia folder which I assume is the Australian map) one at a time from Drive (M) to Drive (I) or should it be done differently?

Assuming this is the correct way do I then purchase & download the new Western Europe map and copy it to the SD card.

Appreciate the help.

What you could do is put the blank SD card in the device, power up the device, plug it to your computer, start home, and if the device doesn't ask to connect to your computer, power off the device then plug it back in, and hit yes" when it asks to connect to your computer. Then in Home, hit "Update my ONE XL" then it will start downloading/installing the navcore software. You will have to download about 4 versions of navcore till you get to the latest. It will ask you to unplug and restart the device upon each install of each version. On each restart the device will ask you select a language, which you can ignore. Just plug in the cable and select "yes" to each time it asks to connect to the computer and keep hitting "update my ONE XL"Eventually what will happen is you end up with the latest navcore, but no map loaded. Then you will click on "add maps, etc" then just download whatever map you want.

Remember, the SD card must remain in the device the whole time during this process.

I sent you a PM by the way.

As 46Jimbo states......YES, this is the best way. Copy everything but the map folder to your SD card and then copy the European folder to the SD card and you should be good to go.

I sent you a PM by the way.

The method you suggested worked (I think:rolleyes: ) can't pick up the European satellites yet, still in Australia.

I guess I will know for sure when we get to London, but all updates downloaded fine.

One other thing I would like to do is back-up to a spare SD card, is this possible, and can yourself someone help?

I gathered from another post I saw somewhere that this might be able to be done but the card/map will only be read in my existing device but that's ok, just like the idea of having the security of a backup.

Thanks for the quick reply, I tried sageuvagony's method and it seemed to work ok, will know when we get to London tomorrow.

Cheers

The reason I told you that method is so that you can start with a FRESH install of everything. And yes you can keep a copy on a spare card, just copy EVERYTHING from either the device or the SD card that the new map is installed on, onto the spare SD card. Which one you put on the spare is up to you. If anything, you could put the NA map on the spare since that way you will have both maps on a separate card. Again, make sure "show hidden and system files" is selected in windows explorer so you don't miss any files during the copying.
