what is the highest SD card can use with XL-S. I mean

the highest capacity, can I use 4 gb or only 2 gb

and also can I use a HC (high capacity) card for only 60x - 80x, if HC is not back compatible then that could be a problem

thank you for any help

Do a search with my name and the keyword TopRam and you shall find my test report and subsequent updates.

Or if you NEVER want to mess with a card reader at ALL and leave the card in the device forever, just buy a high speed-ish regular 2GB SD card.

You need to read my post as I suggested a few posts back where I reported on using a 4GB SDHC. As for leaving the SDHC card in the TT device, you may end up disappointed in doing this as my experience was getting corrupt FAT tables on most large file updates or just getting file errors. Requesting ?chkdsk? with file verification on the SDHC card, while connected to the USB cable, is a _very_ long process because the old USB standard used on all ONE models is quite slow. By using the appropriate SDHC card reader, you not only get faster writes and reads but you also get rid of write errors so common when using the SDHC connected thru the USB cable.

As for larger than 4GB SDHC usage on ONE models, I have yet to read any report. My feeling is that it may be able to read the data but not necessarily be able to write past the 4GB limit. In my 10 month experience with the 4GB SDHC card, I don't yet feel cramped for space and don't expect to feel the need for more storage in the foreseeable future. Of course, I don't use 3rd party program to watch movies on my XL-S as I already have a portable DVD player with a larger screen if I wanted to do that.

Like gilbert said or the quoted message. It's really up to you. Do you find that you will NEED 4 gb? Are you going to be installing a massive amount of MP3's?
I really don't see any use for a 4gb card for a ONE model unless you want to store more than 1 map.

My point in messing with a card reader is the following taken from the report I made on the use of SDHC cards (https://www.tomtomforums.com/showthread.php?t=7336):
"With the card is inserted in my XL-S, I copied a 100,431,872 Byte file to the SD card. It took about 2:40 for the complete copy operation. I deleted the file from the SD card and disconnected the GPS. I removed the SD card and inserted it in the supplied USB adapter and copied the same file to the SD card which took about 25 seconds or around 4MB/s writing. I then was curious about its read speed. I changed to an empty directory on my hard drive (Seagate ST3500630AS SATA) and copied the same file and it took 15 seconds to finish meaning over 6MB/sec reads."

That TopRam card is rated 150X so its speed is completely hindered by the USB cable of ONE models and its old v1 standard. If a user wants to backup or restore the entire content of his card, he better take the card out of the TT and put it in the card reader as the transfer rate will be increased by a factor of around 6X which is well worth the trouble. The GO models feature a different Samsung chipset with an upgraded USB standard.

So in other words he can use a standard high speed 2 GB card without having to use any card reader EVER.

Thanks everyone ...looks like a 2gb for trouble free usage ...that's fine . I go between the UK and USA a lot and need two maps installed . 2gb should do the trick ..No mp3's though...better on my i-Pod .Thanks again everyone .

The point is the speedy SD/SDHC card will be slow as molasses whenever connected thru the TT USB cable. For one very small file copy, it does not matter but whenever the files to copy are medium to high or the number of small files is large, the operation will take a very long time to finish with the likelyhood of getting file corruption/errors/bad FAT table increasing. You did experience corrupted map files in your ONE XL in the recent past and this is what I strive to prevent. Having to restore the whole content of your TT may happen at a most inopportune time when you are in a hurry or away from home.
