See if downloading the Clear Flash tool found here and running it 3 times help to clean up the problem.

Also, what version map and what version application do you have?

Finally, prior to trying the Clear Flash, do a reset on the unit (hold the power button for 15 seconds on your model, I think).

First try this:
1) go to mydocuments\tomtom\home\download\complete\map\usa_can_mex
2) open the activation_xxxxxx.cab file with winrar and copy its contents to your map folder on the tomtom

If that doesn't work, then activation file download must have been corrupt. Do these steps for a new download:
1) Remove the map from the device via "remove items" in HOME.
2) Clear the Tomtom map cache by renaming mydocuments\tomtom\home\download\complete\map to mydocuments\tomtom\home\download\complete\mapold
3) Then try downloading/installing the map again via HOME.

getting worse

I finally got to speak with a Tom Tom CSR on the phone, we tried a few things with no sucess. Bad part was a thunderstorm was rolling tru my area and power was out for a split sec. Anyway he sent me a link to do a disk scan , i did that with the same results. Oh i tried both suggestions that were listed prior to this posting, What was happening after all this was only seeing the splash screen with the 2 Tom Tom hands. Now im in the process of formatting the drive ( After making a backup ) what concerns me is that I started the format last night and now its 8 hrs later and looks like its little over 3/4 done. Now this is becoming more of a hobby just to get this thing updated, i am learning a lot, just not getting anywhere with my 140
I am sure it will still be formatting b4 i leave for work , so i dont know what i will come home too, but I will say the suggestions made on the prior post have been spot on , any other suggestions to try b4 i just plain give up.

If it takes more than an hour to format the drive, then there is a hardware fault. 99% of the time, that means the Tomtom is defective and needs warranty repair. For this you will need to call back Tomtom support.

1% of the time it means your computer and/or usb cable is bad. To rule out the 1%, use a different computer and usb cable to format.
