Safety Cameras

For my XXL540TM, I am unable to download the safety camera update. I keep getting an internet server error and the download fails. I contacted TT Support and they asked me to call support to discuss. I did and the net result was to run an error check on my device. I ran that check. Did not see where any errors were corrected and tried to run the update again. Same results. I've tried to run that update several times, with the same results. This morning, I connected the device to my computer. TTHome came up and said there were three updates available. The safety cameras, a gps fix, and map share update. I checked the update button and got an immediate failure. I then went back and unchecked the safety camera download, and the remaining two items downloaded and installed okay. It appears to me that the internet server error is on the TomTom server side. I haven't called TomTom Support again on this issue, except that I updated the issue, or question, on their website. I would think it would be solvable by TomTom if one download doesn't work while the other two will work. Any thoughts?

Safety Camera updates fail

You are NOT alone. This IS a problem on TomTom's side and they are FULLY aware of it. If you call customer service and push them hard enough they will finally admit it to you. I really find it distasteful that they would outright LIE to us about the problem rather than just admit that they will not support this feature for the time being. The problems seem to stem from legal issues between various States and jurisdictions in the USA where it is illegal to have devices equiped to locate Red Light and Speed Cameras (I live in TX and it's perfectly legal here). As near as I can fingure out it seems to be related to those devices using the USA_CAN_Mexico maps vs. the 2gb North America map...not sure why. My wifes XXL530S update with NO PROBLEMS! My brand new one week old XXL540TM will not. Google the problem and you will find a heck of a lot of pissed off cutomers out there getting the same song and dance we are.

I am also (since I updated the app on my XXL540TM) unable to "activate" the Safety Cameras anymore using the "Safety Cameras" button in TomTom Services. Anyone know how to get that back? Guess I should have backed up my unit via explorer but it was the first time I updatedthat device and I did not expect TomTom to go in a rip out a feature that I was using without at least a warning :-(

Use Explorer and go here:
c:\documents and settings\yourname\my documents\TomTom\Home\Downloads\Complete\Safety Cameras\

Anything in there?

Now, use Explorer and look at the contents of the specific map folder on your unit (USA_Canada_M, I guess). Is there a ov2 file called safety_camera.ov2?

If there is something on your computer but not in the map folder, try using explorer to copy the latest file from the computer to the map folder.

Another way to tackle this is to connect to Home, Manage my Unit, DEvice tab, see if there is a reference to safety cameras. Now, move to the computer tab and look for the same information.

I was advised by TT Support yesterday that they are aware of the problem of downloading the Safety Camera file if you have the USA, Canada, Mexico map. They indicated they are working on the problem. So, I'll keep my fingers crossed that they will follow through.

Wow!! After reading this forum thread I was able to add the safety cams to my XXL540tm with no problem from Home. Did not even know that I was eligible and don't know if I can get future updates. as per this discussion, it appears to be a problem.

I downloaded 'Safety cameras' via TT HOME today, but can't find how to activate them (I have the XL-335TM). I thought it was under 'manage POIs', but don't see a choice there.

Or... is it because with the newer TT application we can no longer can activate this in the USA?

Yeah, my error....apparently that model does have the latest (9.056) app.

The safety camera.ov2 and related files should go right in the map folder on your unit but they are different from other .ov2 files in that you will not see them listed as a poi category in Manage my POIS.

Ok, thanks. I just found under "TomTom Services" the icon "Safety Alerts" then "Change warning preferences" (I seem to remember that some of these were grayed out last week). There I can enable different alert times for "Fixed"; "Temporary"; "Red Light"; "Toll both"; etc and select a sound to alert me.

Is this all I have to do to enable them?

When I was doing a search online for the safety cameras for TomTom, I came across something that suggested that it's a subscribed service and not free. Maybe that's just in Europe, don't know.
