I bought a 6" Go Classic about a year ago and set the road setting for Fastest Route.
However, I've recently been driving around the Lake District and County Durham a lot and I'm finding it's sending me along miles of B class and un-named roads, some of which are barely passable, when there is a far better A road it ignores. Perhaps the notional speed limit on these roads is 60mph but in practice it's hard to get above 25!
What do I need to set it on to ensure it defaults to good major roads???

While set for fastest, have you by chance also told it to avoid certain types of roads? This will also impact routing.

Thanks for last

I'm set for fastest and have set to avoid unpaved roads but I still get taken over minor country roads!
Think I'll try shortest route, see if that makes any difference

Have you tried on Mydrive what Mydrive offers you for the same route.

Is that part of the Tom Tom?
Sorry if that is daft but I'm not really very good with digital stuff. My lad is trying to get me to use other things but I only have a small phone.

Fastest *should* work. I'm wondering if there is a misclassification of a road somewhere in the map data.
Does it change your route at all if you don't avoid unpaved roads?

Here's a spot where you can plan the same start/end points and see what route occurs. I think this is what Willy is talking about:

That will be easier than loading a new app on your phone to reproduce the route.

I don't always think about it but it's true that Mydrive has changed its name now it's plan Tomtom com.

Just curious. Are you willing to share a pair of start and end coordinates for one of the routes that has been causing you problems? It's much easier to investigate when we can duplicate the problem route.

1. From home in Widnes to Boot in Eskdale.
Expected to go along the A595 off the M6 and a short stretch of smaller road from Holbrook to Eskdale. Good fast roads
Instead taken right off A595 near Broughton in Furness and pretty much due north along winding narrow roads called Austhwaite Brow at the north end. Not a pleasant drive in the rain and my friend had a canoe on his roof.

2. Start at High Force, through Middleton on Teesdale going towards Barnard Castle and the main A67 and 688 all the way through to Spennymoor. Instead taken off into unnamed roads round about Eggleston and didn't see a major road again until a couple of miles outside Spennymoor.

If I've got your location properly understood for #1, here's what Google and the online TomTom planner shows for the last part of that journey. Both systems see this as a few (~25) minutes faster than the northern route using A591.

As for the 2nd example, the two seem to be in sync for this as well. In both cases, I've set the online planner to "Fast" and have avoided nothing.

Thank you for both of these. Both reflect what would have been my chosen route and was certainly my route on the way home.
I've had a look at this other Tom Tom thing but I am struggling - digital idiot!! I'm not even sure this response is going right!!!
I just assumed my separate Tom Tom would pick out the same roads as your variation of it. Not sure what to do next!
Thanks again.
