I have few lithium ion battery devices and i know thatn when it is plugged in and being used, the batttery life is decreases majoryly, like half a bottle of old beer and jsut refilling the bottle. It definatly will not taste as good.

Im curious if these TT devicdes when plugged into the car, the batteries are being charged but when it is full, does it switch run off of the power chord? Because i dont want to unplug the device everytime i notice the battery is fully charged.

It is my understanding that the TomTom battery is NOT being charged from the vehicle -- it only charges when connected to the computer. My TT One 3rd shows "charging" when connected to the computer, but does not show this when connected in the vehicle.

I've read this before... where TT support says the GPS battery only charges when connected to your computer through the USB port. But I've noticed that my TT-3rd edition does if fact charge when plugged into my car's cigarette lighter. The green light is on of course - AND - it says 'charging' on the screen. Two days ago when I was driving with my TT plugged in, I checked periodically and TT said charging. Then about 20 minutes later it showed fully charged (all the way green and no charging indicated).

For my experience I think TT support is mistaken, or... all of the TomToms are not the same. Not sure.

My understanding is that it is a trickle charge through the cig adapter, but it is a charge, just as you've observed.

My one unit definitely charges through the car adaptor and it does not look like any trickle charge to me. It also stops charging when the battery is fully charged. you can see this indicated by the word "charging" under the battery indicator when charging is in fact taking place.

Exactly....my 930 is the same way.

I had the same "No charge" indication from my brand new XL S. Called support. They said, "It's the charger. We'll send you a new one pronto."

Well, it wasn't "Pronto" but I checked support today and she said, "It will be sent tomorrow." Bothersome to wait so long for such a vital equipment.

At least I know it will last for the full two hours with screen shut off between instructions. Only have 8 days left on my Wal Mart guarantee should I need to turn it back in. Lots of serious map errors here in Maine on the 8.010 map.

It's a trickle charge compared to the computer charge. I don't have a voltmeter, but I'll tell you it's a USB connection, the same as I have on my Motorola Q9m phone. According to my phone, the charge coming through the USB cable shipped with the TomTom 920 series is insufficient to charge my cell phone's battery (it gives me an error message that tells me so). In fact, so little that whereas a normal USB voltage would be enough to power my phone and charge the battery during a phone call, the TomTom adapter is only enough to slow the battery depletion of said phone during an active call.

The TomTom can recharge whenever it is connected to a voltage source. Circuitry within the unit and battery determines if charging is necessary and limits the charge rate to the correct value when the battery is fully charged. Leaving the unit connected to the car or computer should have little impact, if any, on battery life. I charge my TomTom in my home using an USB adapter that plugs into the wall outlet and I use this for my pocket PC, MP3 player, etc.

Guys, I stand corrected. In playing with my TT some more, I find it does show " charging" when connected in the vehicle. Don't know why it was not showing this a few days ago -- maybe I didn't have the plug pushed in enough.
