Problems with satellites

I bought a Tomtom 920 on ebay. When connected for the first time I've seen that does not detect GPS signal. Constantly shows "Waiting to receive a valid GPS signal" and "The GPS signal was lost ... sec ago. I have tried in the street and in the field without success.

I updated the navcore thinking that but apparently not settled.

I need your help to fix it because not to do.

I live in Spain and the gps to buy in U.K. I tried to contact who sold it to me but still I have no solution.

Greetings.

Switch it on and take it outside away from any buildings, tap the sat strength meter then you will see another sat strength meter on the resultant screen, tap this and you get a full screen dedicated to just the GPS information. After 10 minutes is there any activity on the screen, grey or blue bar graphs, and any coloured numbered circles on the round display?

A full update for the device can take 12,5 minutes while the device obtains informatin from the GPS birds, once it is updated (this is automatic by the way) subsequent time to first fix should be much lower - Mike

In the section that says the state of gps at the top mark around zero on the right side and does not indicate a point at the bottom where it is assumed that the satellites should appear is blank.
On top of corners there is a schedule that is increasing, then the symbol appears next to the UTC, and there is a circular icon with arrows
moving.

The device I have left on my terrace (8th floor) until the battery unchanged.

Try a pin reset on the unit. If that doesn't help, use Explorer to look at the contents of your unit. you should see a folder called ephem on your unit. Delete anything you see in that folder.

Now, start Home. Update. You should get a gpsquickfix file offered. Accept and install.

Then disconnect the unit PROPERLY from the computer and try for the signal again.

Apart from this model have a go510 that if you have the folder mentioned "ephem" but this model does not appear.

The folders listed are: art, audiobooks, bin, contacts, demo, GNS, guam, Helpman, home pictures, itn, licenses, logging, LoquendoTTS, mp3, Nort_America, phone_database, photos, poi, program, raster, script, SIMCARD , sounds, statdata, Install.app TomTom Home, TomTom-Cfg, voices, Western_and_Central_Europe, and zip.

I created the folder contents as you say and I've connected to your computer. Updated the GpsQuickFix. Then I disconnected the device from the pc and try the same.

One thing, this unit may not lead Sirf Star III chip and take another?

You may be right about the chip. Earlier models did not have the SIRF as I understand

I hope that the seller did not sell you a broken unit...like I have had with two of my units in the past..not seeing ten satellites right above me. That would be NOT nice! This could be impossible to prove, and of course, no help from TomTom on a replacement unit. I am hoping for you that the unit will resurrect. Frustrating I know.

There are different chips used in Tomtoms (depending on model) but both use QuickGPSfix and both look the same to the application.

The GPS gets confused if it moves 100s of km while it's off. Did you try the pin reset per dhn's request? The combination of a pin reset, the quickgpsfix (which you did), and waiting outdoors for 5-10 minutes usually unconfuses the tomtom. Once it's unconfused (and if you download quickgpsfix at least once a week), the GPS returns to its usual 5-second signal-acquisition time.

I've only seen one member who had a defective GPS receiver, and that member's GPS wheel in the detail page wasn't spinning. Since yours was spinning, there's a good chance the steps above will fix it.

I have noticed a major difference in the way my ONE XL and 720 connect. The ONE XL seems to have had a slower refresh rate/beacon as far as looking for satellites. What I mean is, the ONE XL would gain and lose connections at a much slower rate, at almost 5 to 10 second intervals whereas the 720, QUICKLY loses and regains connection at around 1 to 2 second intervals. I had made a thread about this earlier and was told that both units had different chipsets from eachother. The 720 is very zippy.

MVL....I had hopes that my 720 with spinning wheel in upper right corner might resurrect...but unfortunately it is not seeing satellites....empty satellite rings and empty satellite bars. TomTom did replace my 7 week old 920 with a refurb, plus my map subscription for the original 920, but I am still hanging onto the 720 in the unlikely event that life can be breathed into it. S

Well the spinning wheel member, shagggyyyy sent their tomtom in, and it was returned (working) by tomtom saying they couldn't find anything wrong.

Are you on the latest 8.351 app? If not, try an upgrade. The upgrade appears to reset the GPS in some weird way because many members take 5-10 minutes outdoors before getting their initial GPS fix after the upgrade.

Yes, I did put the 8.351 app on today...it had the 8.350. Just for grins after I post this I will once again take it outside. S

Just got off the phone with TomTom Support, and basically the GO720 needs to R.I.P. I was hoping that they could replace the satellite detector or whatever is broken, but no luck...wasn't worth their trouble or my cost....dang, it was such a good unit at one time. S

Hi

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your TomTom, you are a little stuck here as the TomTom you have purchased is from Ebay. This means you do not have a warrenty unless it was bought from a recognised retailer however, the spanish team team would be happy to assist you over the phone or via email with your problems.

BACK YOUR DEVICE UP, try via Home or if that does not work please try a manual backup

Try this first

TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Support home - Select your product

This 2nd

TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Support home - Select your product

This last

TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Support home - Select your product

If this fails

Under the ebay buys policy you have a right to return the item to them if there is a fault from when you purchased the device, if you have paid via paypal I would start a dispute now, and this will usually get there immediate attention. But I would try the customer support first.

Have fun!

HI

Dam you posted this whilst I was typing my previous response..if you bought of ebay within the last 21 days or so raise a dispute via paypal.

Have fun

i put my 920t in it's cradel last night, accepted the gps fix and other update stuff and then today i've had lots of problems with 'waiting for gps etc...'

It worked first thing this morning in my windowthen i switched it off until my van then it had no fix, after 20 min still no fix, i reset with pin, it worked, i got to destination switched it off, when i went to leave it had the same problem...

i left it for half an hour and still no location, i have reset hard and soft no fix, i just rolled back to the last time i backed up and then updated and this time it has a fix... but for how long

Anyone else had this recently?

Yes, Tomtom posted a bad quickgpsfix over the weekend, for the sirfstar models (mostly the GO line).

It appears it's fixed, but you'll have to fix it manually. See here for steps.

Tomtom does this about once every 3 months.

I must've picked it up too. This is the first time in many months that my 720 has "failed to connect" all day long-- though multiple pin resets & reboots. Oddly, it connects with difficulty, first thing in the morning. Then, nothing.

Time to wipe the ephem folder...
