The find POI along route feature is limited to short routes. (using XXL 540, latest navcore, latest map) For example, I set a route from Long Island NY to Stroudsburg Pa. I then tried to find some POI's along the route. When I search for gas stations, although their are stations all along the 150 mile route, the TT xxl 540 only shows gas stations for the next 20 miles. When I search for "Walmart" along the route, it again only shows the Walmart that is near my current location.

This is very frustrating. If I'm on the highway traveling a few hundred miles and want to know if there is something along the route, it doesn't work.

I saw a video demo of TT fuel prices usa where the TT showed stations and fuel prices all along a route of about a hundred fifty miles. So the unit has the capability. But it looks like the default setting for the TT xxl 540 is crippled to only search the nearby section of the route.

Is there a workaround to allow searching for gas stations along the entire route other then buying the fuel prices add-on (I'm not looking for fuel price info, just station locations)

Is there a workaround to allow searching for POI's along the entire route?

A limitation of the software, I'm afraid. You can search for a poi 'in city' or 'near destination' while on route to get an additional listing.

An UNECCESSARY limitation of the software too....
Older software and models were perfectly capable of showing POIs over the entire journey.
(upto the maximum number of screens, which I forget at the moment, but was something like 8 screens of 6 results)

An intentional "limitation" of the software. Buy the TT fuel price service and it will show all gas stations along the route.

BUT, paying extra for TT's fuel price service only unblocks the search for gas stations.

Want to find rest stops along the route? It doesn't work unless the rest stop is within about 20 miles.

This crippling of the search POI's along route is awful. It's probably nothing more then an arbitrary choice by the person setting up the TT software to limit the search to about 20 miles. Maddening. This should be fixed.

It is usually 50 miles or rather 80 km for me.

Venting in this peer-to-peer group may release the heat under the collar.
Raising a service ticket by everyone may get their attention a little sooner.

Well I've certainly complained to TT about it more than once ;)

Can everybody else?

I called TomTom today about the crippled search POI along route problem. Had to escalate to supervisor to get someone to recognize the issue. Supervisor first told me BS - that this is intentional because otherwise the TT would have to process too much information. When I brought up how the feature does work when the user buys TT fuel prices he finally got it. Then he told me no one else has ever brought this up.

Says he will send me an email in the future advising me of status of this issue.

But... I found TT fuel prices on sale on Amazon for $6. Here is a link http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001ET5O6Q/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new

Scroll down to the TT fuel prices for $1 plus $4.99 shipping. TT support guy told me that when subscription ends search feature will continue to work, but fuel prices will no longer update...

Actually, it's not BS ... at least not what he told you. They just got their priorities totally screwed up.

There's a group back in NL that decided (thanks a bunch, guys) that they required a full response from the device in X seconds (I believe it's 5, and it's entirely arbitrary). They discovered that under certain circumstances, allowing the full range search was causing a lack of page fill with responses in > 5 seconds, and decided to choke the thing down to the 50 miles that we have today (at least it's 50 on my 740 and later devices).

LOTS of us were VERY annoyed by that, and told them that, and told them we'd rather wait for results rather than not get the results we needed! So we keep pounding on the issue in hopes that the firmware will get 'fixed'.

Wow Canderson, that explains a LOT! I'd be very happy to just have options / preference choices for how far to search...

And anyway, requiring the FULL response in under x seconds seems just bonkers since with a more extensive search as the responses come scrolling in we would get the most local responses quickly anyway.

Another search option that I would find very helpful for gas stations would be to search for stations ranked by the minimum total detour from route.

Thanks for explaining this and putting heat on them about it.

Bonkers. Yes. A nicer way of putting it than some of us have used...

At least the device still gives the old green/yellow/blue indicators of route deviation. I'm pooped tonight, and can't for the life of me recall the maximum distances associated with each in terms of detour.

........ can't for the life of me recall the maximum distances associated with each in terms of detour.

Yes, it would be appropriate to have a legend on the screen specifying the route detour distances.

In addition, the color choices are counter intuitive, at least to me. To me, Green should represent the closest options, yellow the next bext choices, and dark orange the least attractive choices.

From playing with my XXL 540 it appears the Blue arrow represents directly on the route, Green about a mile, yellow maybe 2-3 miles.

I'm at work at the moment without any Tomtoms in front of me, but the colours of the arrows did used to be similar to your suggestions.
Here's what it says in the old GoO300 manual about them...

There are several icons used beside Points Of Interest in the list. A straight green arrow means that the POI is on your route; a bent green arrow means that a small detour from your route is needed to reach it; a bent yellow arrow means that this POI needs a bigger detour from your route; finally, with no icon shown, the POI is not on your route at all.

Instead of a straight green arrow, the units made after 71 A.D. all use a blue straight arrow. It's easier to see.

Still -- I know I read somewhere (eons ago) the actual distances involved for green and yellow, but darned if I can find it anywhere.

An update has been published today for MyTomtom-based devices:

http://discussions.tomtom.com/t5/GO...800-1000-2000-Via-Start-20-and-60/td-p/605058

POI range has been substantially increased. I've seen about 1200 miles as the horizon on some test searches.
It still limits you to the closest 96 results in any search, even if under 1200 miles.

Unfortunately, the update does not apply to older devices that connect to Tomtom HOME. Those still have the 50 mile limitation.

Which they never used to have!
Introducing unneccessary limitations later is much worse then having them from the beginning.
