I think I've tried everything with my tomtom and i'm at whit's end with this dang thing.. i tried installing the map update the other day and my computer froze in the middle of it. I wasn't aware of the fact that i was supposed to backup my tomtom before installing updates onto it, so no i cannot restore it to the point that it was at before.. i have tried just copying the system files, i've tried formatting my tomtom and starting from scratch.. when i try to reinstall everything, i consistantly get an error that says it failed to copy a file, and the file is different every time. I want to be able to install the tomtom application files and the map manually because tomtom home keeps messing up my tomtom. when i try to turn on my tomtom, it just stays at the load screen and never turns all the way on.. ive tried formatting it to fat and fat32. i think i've tried everything that i could possibly try. is there anyone that could upload their tomtom xl 330s system files so that i could just copy them exactly and have that work? please help

Welcome to TTF.

Let's take this in steps............

First of all, the format should be fat32, not fat. And not quickformat.

Next, if your map was an update of the original, it should be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\

Check that it is (in compressed format).

Please make an Explorer, not Home, backup of whatever is on the unit now. Then delete all the loose files in the root of the unit, NO folders or their contents.

Connect to Home and you should be offered an application. Accept, install and detach the unit from Home properly using the device disconnect icon on Home's screen.

Then, see the information here about installing the map without using Home:
https://www.tomtomforums.com/genera...nstall-downloaded-map-without-using-home.html

Try that.

If you still run into issues, it may be the original download was corrupt. In that case, rename the Downloads folder in the path above to DownloadsOLD and get a new map update and try the install then.

Finally, make sure your computer is not using a wireless connection to the Internet. TT's servers tend to barf distributing large downloads such as maps on a wireless.....

i had tried that. when i tried installing the tomtom application, it would have the error again.. no worries though, i found a solution.. i formatted the tomtom to fat (i unchecked the quick format box). after it was completely wiped, i went into where tomtom home downloads the files. I then extracted the tomtom application to a new folder on my desktop, i then also extracted the map to the same folder, and the map activation to the correct map folder. i then took all the files inside the new folder and copied and pasted them inside the tomtom. After it was complete, i safely ejected it and it started up (without any voices installed yet, but i'm taking care of that right now). thanks for your help.

Glad to here it's coming along...

However, I hope you formatted it to FAT32 and not just FAT. FAT is for older 16 bit applications while FAT32 is for newer 32 bit applications (at least for MS Windows, I don't know how LINUX will handle it).

But if you still have problems and decide to format it again be sure to use FAT32.

:O

Oh man I think I finally found a solution. I got to try to do this  I'll be honest I'm kinda worried to format my tom tom disk clean

I'm really not to good on computers and can't really follow. Could you give me the dummy version or the step by step version?

Connect the device to the computer and bring up Windows Explorer (Computer) then right click on the TomTom drive letter.

Look down the list and find "Format" and click it.

Leave everything as it is except make sure Quick Format is unchecked and File System is FAT32, then click Start.

This may take quite a while, so go watch your favorite TV show for a while.

Once formatting is complete you can then copy your backup files to the device.

Oh boy

Oh boy Back up files  Oh crap x_x Umm... please tell me there is a way around backing up the files :( I would message the guy and beg for the file he got but i need 20 posts. I'm only up to 6 posts? Will tomtom home 2 work? I still got that installed.

Alright got done with futurama, sucks it's their last ep for the season and just got done with the fat32 format... now tom tom home 2 started up automatically and I'm nerves to even look at it. Although It has a list of the stuff the gps had before the format and the error "patchfilter.dat" isn't driving me nuts so that's a plus  Sweet sooo.... i download from tomtomHome2 and then?

Map?

Alright, so after snooping and downloading I finally got my GPS back on its feet. Only problem is no map. I followed everything the mod said but i looked into my complete folder under C:\Users\my_name\Documents\TomTom\HOME\Download\complete and no maps? I looked into each one of them and couldn't find any maps of the US and Canada which was what I had. I looked into TomTom Home 2 to try to get it from them and nothing  any one can anyone shine some light please?

Did you ever make a backup of your unit's contents? If so, you can restore from there.

If you look at the content of the UNIT using Explorer, can you see a USA_Canada map folder with files in it?

When you first installed TomTom Home 2 did you make a backup of your GPS?

If so, just restore it.

If not, in TT Home, go to "Manage my device" and then look on the "Items on my computer" tab.

What do you see?

No back up :( and boy does that sound smart about now. Funny thing is when i first connected the tomtom to home2 i found the map that was installed with my tomtom listed as "free" so i guess I assume that it would be there after coming back after formatting it and putting everything back together from TTHome2.

Under Manage my XL I see Applications(1) Voices (8) Car symbols (5) Shut-down Images (1) and nothing about maps

Not good. I take it that you have never made a backup of your unit by any means whatsoever (either using Home, or manually?)

Did you EVER take advantage of the "latest map guarantee" when you purchased your unit, or have you EVER updated the map on your unit since you've owned it?

Your right I haven't and didn't. The TomTom use to belong to my brother who now has a smart phone and basically uses that as his GPS. I on the other hand basically got the GPS after it sat for years and was hoping I could take advantage of the updates and get the GPS up to date but it all failed and now I have no GPS. I really wish I backed it up even though the GPS was already giving me problems.

The TomTom use to belong to my brother ...
Ask him if by ANY chance he ever hooked it up to a computer he still owns. There's some chance that he may have taken advantage of the "Latest Map Guarantee" right after he purchased it. If so, he may still have the HOME directory on his computer with a map in it that you can use. Beyond that, it's buy-a-map time.
