One XL-S and SD CARD

ONE XL-S
I just bought a One XL-S and it no longer includes an SD card. It has a sticker over the card slot that says that there is now 1Gb of internal memory and maps are loaded on that.

The SD card is now optional. I want to add at least 2GB if not more for POI's, saved routes, etc.

1. If I put an SD card do I have to move the map files to it? It seems to me I read this someplace.

2. Will the One XL-S use an HDSC card? I would like to put 4gb in but there are no 4gb cards that are not HCSD that are readily found. This would limit memory to 2GB.

Any links to learn about using the SD Card with this GPS?

Thanks in advance!

I routinely use a TopRam 4GB SDHC card but need to advise using a SDHC card reader for full satisfaction. You can read my report on my experience if you search for ?report TopRam? with my name. You will need to copy all your internal memory content to the SD card because ONE models use either internal memory or SD card so when the SD card is inserted, you can't access internal memory.

1. Yes, you MUST put the map folder in the SD card also as your POIs will go in there.

2. Yes, if you get new bootloader, 5.5, I think.

So I just backup the whole unit to the SD card using the computer?

Yes, I know about using an HCSD card reader. I use an HCSD card in my camera. The card won't be read on my PC without it.

Am I underestimating the internal memories capacity? I am primarily interested in adding as many POI files and saving trip routes rather than adding map files. I am just fine with the map coverage that it came with. How full is the XL-S memory to start? I am reading threads about having to delete files to add files. Is the internal 1gb enough to hold added POIs, etc.?

Custom made poi's or one's downloaded are pretty small in size to tell you the truth and should fit within the specific map folder.

The XL-S has only 1GB of internal memory. Most will simply delete the Guam map to get additional space as its usefullness is doubtful. If you wish to add voices, the large 9x0 POI database etc. you will find internal memory to be rather small. This is where the SDHC card will come to the rescue.

Keep in mind, for the XL-S, if you go for the SD card option, you'll need to copy EVERYTHING from the internal memory to the SD card to make it work. You cannot just put the POI or the Maps folder on the SD card, you need the operating system and all associated files along with it.

This was what I mentioned in my last sentence of post #2. All ONE models are afflicted with the either internal memory or SD card usage. IOW, ONE models cannot use both internal memory and SD card at the same time and the reason all internal memory needs to be copied to the SD card for your TT to function.

How crucial is the speed of the SD card? Some SD cards do not identify any speed. Some say 60x, etc. If the XL-S is going to all reading and writing to and from that card will a "standard" card slow the functioning down - sceren writes, routing, re-routing, etc.?

The faster the better. 60x may be a little slow.....

The fastest card I am finding is a Class 6 SD card which has a minimum transfer rate of 6MB/sec. Is this what everyone is using?

restore crashing tomtom app?

So I did the backup of the internal memory, put in a 2G sd card, then tell it to restore. The screen on the one-xl loses the big red X but still shows a cable plugged into it, the external disk icon still shows up on my desktop, and the tomtom app goes into the spinning color wheel and the dock shows "application not responding". The only way to get the app to die is to unplug the usb cable, "force quit" doesn't work, ps shows the process trying to exit, but apparently waiting on i/o... This is on osx 10.5.4.

It looks like it's just being excruciatingly slow about writing, though it would be nice if it had a progress report so that you could tell that. I'll let it run overnight and pick up a high end card tomorrow...

It seems to me you are using the USB cable with the SD card inserted in your TT and ntoicing the slowness of that method. That is exactly the reason why I highly recommend using a SD card reader/adapter.

It's not just slow, it's hanging. I even got a pack of 20MB/s 2G cards. It got further when I let it install the software before doing the restore, but it is currently hung on crpoi.dat (a few hundred bytes!); previously it hung on data.chk, which is only 5.5M and shouldn't take long even on the slowest cards. And I'm getting the spinning color wheel again, which is a sure sign.

However it appears you're right: I put the sd card in a usb sd card reader, and tomtom home correctly restored to it.

At least it recovers from the hang when you unplug the device on it, but it's annoying that it latches on to the card even in a separate reader, so you can't eject it. Even quitting the tomtom app doesn't release it. I had to "sync" from the command line to make sure all was written and then unplug it as well. Ugly. But it seems to have worked.

Which is precisely why I caution users not only to disconnect their device from Home using Home's menu option to do so but also NOT to disconnect when Home says it's safe to do so.....rather, to wait until the unit boots to the opening map/legal screen (depending upon firmware).

When I was not using the card reader and using the SDHC card, when connected thru Home, only the QuickFix would write correctly and MapShare files would create errors. I would need to run ?chkdsk /f? on the SDHC unit, I never had this problem when connected with the SDHC card reader.

As for TT's writing capabilities to the SDHC card, I made many screen captures and all were fine, same with routes, adding favorites, adding a new POI etc. The roadblock here is TT's USB cable. Since SDHC card readers are rather cheap in price, I can't see any reason not using them vs the trouble free and considerable speed advantage it has. A complete backup and verify of the SDHC card is not over an hour with the card reader which has people hesitate to make one. You now understand why I can't recommend using SDHC cards without a card reader...

Can I use my pc card reader to load the HDSC card then put it into my TomTom XL One?
