I want to share a true and recent story of my ongoing problem with the TOM TOM XL and now the TOM TOM company/tech support.

I have a TT XL that is now 9 months old. When brand new I sat looking at the address programed in with my eys while the voice of TT gently told me to turn in the opposite direction. Updates and updates and more updates and the device still doesn't seem to know where its going. A few weeks ago I was driving to a location I was familiar with when it again told me to turn the wrong way. Just for giggles I endulged the device and as soon as I made the turn it told me to make a "U" turn as soon as I could. The saga continues.... I recently started a sales job which requires me to travel to places I am not familiar with, and when I programmed in the addresses the first 2 were problems. Number one sent me to the right house number on the wrong end of town (N Street v.s South Street). The second a few miles away in the heart of town doesn't exist according to TT.

I used my partners Garmin and guess what both of the addresses do exist and right where they were supposed to be. Well trying to be fair I went online and bought the latest map update and a years subscription to the map updates. Downloaded the new stuff and you guessed it still no address in the maps.

Again like a good little consumer I checked all the versions and anything else I could thinking that I may be the problem but as it turns out I am not.

I contacted the customer service line and the positive note is that both the CSR and her supervisor spoke english, but that was it. I spent over 90 miinutes with the pair and got nothing for my time. Nothing for my effort but a request to do their job for them again. The CSR told me that the map on her system was 2.5 years old and she couldn't verify my problems with her software she would have to ask for a new map. Her old map and then her new map said the same thing that my old map and my new map said. Again, NO HELP!!!! The new map and software is a week old, litterally, so I asked for a refund on the software because it didn't work. The supervisor got n the phone at this point.

The supervisor told me of all the problems they had had for the last 5 years trying to get the map system upto date and reliable, but essentially it was a work in progress and after 30 plus minutes he REFUSED to refund my money for the software I just purchased.

I appreciate you listening to my vent! I tell you though if you are looking for a device that is reliable, does what the manufacturer claims, and one that when the device fails the company stand behind! DONT BUY A TOM TOM!! I can assure you I will never own another one.

Sorry for your problems. Indeed, there are gaps in the mapping data for TomTom just as there are areas in North America where Garmin's aren't the best.

Don't know why you were surprised at the language the CSR spoke. You were calling upper New York State.
