In the Android app, go to Settings > Sounds & Warnings > Audio output. There are 6 channels to choose from.

I have done all the things ToTom suggests.

If the speaker is not muted, check in the settings then sounds and alerts that some settings are enabled.
Also check that the sound button on your phone is not disabled.
