No route recording option

i have bought a Tomtom go expert plus 7 to replace and old tomtom, i have set it up as instructed, but there is no record route option in the menu. I checked this was available on the go expert plus models, and it stated it was, why isn't it showing anywhere in any of the menu's? any help will be appreciated
