No Map Found!

Well, I got my new TomTom 720 Go for Christmas; charged it for two hours and proceeded to update the US Map which it said I could do. I was very surprised to find that the download was going to take six hours; so I went to bed and checked it in the morning. I found that my computer said the download had been done successfully and it was also installed successfuly. That was the LAST thing to go right. I disconnected the device from the USB connection and fired it up. The next thing I was presented with was having to plot a route in Guam. I have NO US map on the Tomtom any longer. I deleted Guam and now I have a blank screen. I've tried to download twice since and it say that it does it correctly, but still no map. Anyone else ver see anything like this? Of course, I DID NOT back up my original factory condition. didn't think it would be necessary.

Connect your unit to the computer. Then use Windows Explorer to browse it's contents. Do you see the map folder? Is it full or empty?

If the folder is there, I think you need to call TT Customer Service.

If the folder is empty or missing, realize that it may be on your hard drive. Look in the folder where Home stores the files it downloads. (On the top row of Home, click Preferences, then Folder Preferences).

The map should be there as .cab file (kind of a zip file). You need a program to open it up. Try WinRar. It has a free trial period. Once you've extracted the files, copy and paste the map folder to your TomTom.

For what it's worth, I found that the copy & paste method did not work for me when I, too, ran into the 'no maps found!' error some time back.

Only copying from the map from my pc to the unit using TTHome seemed to 'take'. I suspect the file, 'mapsettings.cfg' gets created via this method and is needed by the unit's software to 'see' the map installed.

Same thing here, tried approx 15 times finally worked on #15 and after many, many hours. TomTom's servers are "underwater" trying to update the millions of TTs given on christmas. I'm not defending them, believe me. Take a look in the My Documents part of your PC too, you will see the various files it is attempting to save to your PC which will then go to your PC, you'll also see a backup directory too once you do one, I keep several levels of backup and rename them something like backup 12-26-07, backup 12-27-07, sometimes the time or more exacting info is in the directory's NEW title.
I think there is something buried deep into the pref that allows for a Return to Defaults, not sure if it will ressurect the American map though.
I am not overjoyed with the road inaccuracies and bizzare routings I've seen or it's wierd way of having you go around blocks to accomplish a U turn.
