TomTom Model(s)
none
After dithering for weeks about what satnav to buy, getting advice on this forum, and reading endless reviews, I decided to buy the tomtom 825 Europe. OH Dear! what a mistaka to maka!!
After trying all day to get the thing uploaded with the latest maps etc, and constantly being told there was something wrong, and getting one message on my laptop telling me to discconect the device and try again while at the same time getting a messsage on the the device telling me NOT TO DISCONNECT, or getting messages to load a sim card (it dosent have a sim card slot it`s internal) after it had crashed three or four times after downloading for ages, I gave up and took it back and got a refund.

So what to do now, the reviews for tomtom and the views of a lot of people of the tomtom customer support, does not make for nice reading and a warm comfortable feeling about the product.

I want a modern device, which has all the goodies, but essentially good safety camera warnings, but i want it work seamlessly, realiably and without problems.
Any advice anyone?

Are you sure that it wasn't an SD CARD that it was asking for?

The 825 wouldn't have a SIM card as it's not a LIVE model, but it certainly DOES have a micro-SD card slot.
It's under a cover on one of the edges of the unit.

OK sorry you are quite right, it was a typo error thats all. I didnt realise it had a slot under a cover, i did look but couldnt see one . And there was no mention of one in the pathetic instructions supplied with the device. But anyway, I was so dissapointed with constantly getting messages saying my device was not working and having spent most of the day trying to get it loaded and work, together with the difficulty of getting through to support, andI just gave up and returned it.
In some ways I am dissapointed, because I do believe it has better features than the NuLink Garmin I ended up with, but even so I doubt I would have used a lot of them. Bearing in mind the numerous and very negative reports about TomTom abounding on the internet I just wasnt prepared to spend the time and effort of persevering with it.
The Garmin I bought works perfectly, no problems at all. I also downloaded their free basecamp route planning software, and although a bit complicated I got a basic understanding of it eventually, and planned a complicated trip across France with 41 waypoints and easily transferred it to the device. Though this did involve several calls to their support, which were all answered in under 2 minutes, and very professionally dealt with.
I read in one of the posts in this forum (I Think) that one user was convinced that TomTom had introduced several features without fully testing them and was using users as developers to discover gremlins. I think he may be right.
So sorry TomTom but on this occaision you have lost a customer, get your act together, produce a product that works, provide a decent customer support, and maybe, just maybe, i will give it a try next time around. But in the meantime I am afraid Garmin gets my vote.:thumb:
