I am delighted to find this active forum. I have never owned a GPS system, but am seriously considering a purchase. TomTom has been highly recommended. My wife & I live in the U.S. and are planning a fall trip to Italy. Apparently most TomTom products sold in the U.S. are pre-loaded with U.S. & Canada. Are some models pre-loaded with Europe or is the European map purchased separately -- if so, how much. We would like to keep the total price $300 - $400, if possible. Any model suggestions and any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Bob L

The high-end models like the 910 (becoming obsolete) and the new 930T have both NA and EU maps pre-installed. The 930T though is over your budget. Since you will be going only to Italy, then purchase a unit based on your budget and then purchase the map of Italy.

I recently acquired a refurbished 720 from Tiger Direct for $249 (last time I looked, they were $269) for a friend in Germany (they do not discount much there). These are like new and come with map guarantees (when you set up TT Home, it offers the new map as an free upgrade).

I then installed the Western European maps ($99 then - on sale now) on it also (you will need an SD card - recommend a 4 GB SDHC). You could get Italy only, but I recommend the above.

This comes in withing your budget.

Try to find a 920 around. Since the 930's are out, a 920 may be found at a good price. Has both North American and W& CEurope maps and you should be able to upgrade to the latest versions of BOTH using the 30-day Latest Map Guarantee.

But, a caution if you do find one: be careful who you buy it from. TomTom has been known to be very difficult with customers who purchase units from ebay as they don't recognize ebay as a legitimate seller; however, I understand amazon.com is ok.

Here is where I bought my Go-920 that came with US & Canada as well as Central & Western Europe Maps.
To what I am lead to beleave there is very little difdference between the new top of the line G0-930 and this G0-920

(I also got the one year free map guarantee with my unit not sure if that is still with the units on sale now or not)

TomTom does recognize them and your warrinty is good.

I just checked and they have the Go-920 on for $332.00

And if you like you can also pick up a Sandisk SDHD 4 GB card for $38.99

Giving you everything for under $400.00

I have bought 2 GPS units from them in the past 5 years and have found them good people to deal with.
